Who isn’t migrating Tax Credits to UC ?

Received a letter about migrating from Tax Credits to Universal Credit.

A deep dive into seems to show that a huge chunk will be taken due to savings over £16k. It also seems like a lot of hassle trundling into Job Centres.

I have decided not to bother with moving so do the TCs just stop?

Interested to learn who else has decided not to bother??

Hello I am just like you. Decided not to apply UC. I let the deadline finished today. Do I need to do something to end TC officially ? So confused 🫤
could you please your experience with me ?

I didn’t apply either. My tax credits just ended around the date I was supposed to migrate over by. Then a few weeks later I got a letter saying how much I owed from over payments & then saying I still have a chance to apply by the 9th of March.

Did you get any payment from tax credit after the deadline finished? I don’t want overpayment 🫤Thank you for sharing your experience 🙏

Yes I did. Just the one week. My deadline was Feb 10th & they paid me again on the Monday.

You will be moved to universal credit eventually by the end of 2025

from reading different forums it seems that it is dawning on lots of TC claimants that UC is a lot stricter with more commitments to meet and that is putting off a lot of people from migrating. I think I read in the DWP stats that one in four are choosing not to migrate and just letting their tax credits claim end.

Yep playing the system. Makes you wonder if they actually needed the TC if they can manage without UC doesn't it?

On other forums I have read numerous cases where people have totally unviable businesses earning next to nothing yet have been claiming working tax credits for years on end, now they have switched to Uc they suddenly realise that they are going to have to prove their business is viable and cannot get away with declaring £100 a month profit or whatever and being generously topped up by wtc. Others have second homes which now after a year is going to mean their Tc claim ends ( how could this ever have been allowed in the first place ? ) Lots of people seem to have been claiming working tax credit whilst never even working the hours they should have and it never seems to have been checked up on, they are now having a shock on Uc where they are expected to actually work the hours required.

Edited

Yep. One claimed her husband only earned £8,000 a year from his business. Convenient.

You have to physically apply to claim universal credit. Tax credits will end at some point, sooner rather than later for some people. The moving you over is a misconception, you aren't required to claim anything.

We've had a reminder that deadline for our managed is approaching. We get very little tc now and oldest dc finishes education in a few months anyway. Then dh would have to fill in his application, rather than me doing it on his behalf. It will probably take us longer time wise to do the application than we would collectively earn at nmw for that amount of work.

Hi Sherrycat , they did pay me once after my credits end 🤦‍♀️ I still didn’t receive the letter for the overpayment and confirming the end. How long does it take to come ? 2 or 3 weeks ??

I still haven’t had any letter yet about over payment. I’ve heard we’ll get something around April/May time.

Hi I have just migrated from tax credits to UC got a letter today saying overpayment on tax credits do you know if I am more secure on UC not to get an overpayment as they know what you earn I really can't cope with another overpayment
