I am paying off the balance of my holiday. Unfortunately it is more than the amount I allowed to put on my credit card. I've always heard it's better to pay for stuff in the credit card for protection. Is there any point puttinf some on the credit card, paying off immediately and then putting the rest on there?

You only need to pay part of the holiday on the credit card to benefit from the protection. Do you have the money elsewhere to pay the rest?

The rule is section 75, MSE has some information on it if you google that

Have you asked your credit card company for a temporary credit limit increase?

I did the online banking thing and am at my max. Good suggestion otherwise

I thought as ling as you paid £100 minimum of the bill you had the protection.

NoWordForFluffy · 10/01/2024 20:35

You can pay a tiny amount. It's the cost which has to be £100 or over.

We pay big things like holidays off in batches on the credit card, as we get loyalty points which convert to cash. So a whole pound or something off the holiday!

So long as some of it is on the credit card (check the amount) you will get the benifit.

Also, where are you paying it off? Online, and I'd use a credit card, basically because I don't put my debit card online unless I have to. Not sure if that's outdated now.

You can often make an overpayment to your credit card that increases the limit.

NoWordForFluffy · 11/01/2024 16:54

MSE: can pay as little as a penny on the credit card.

Credit card is the banks money so say you book a holiday and the company goes bust, the bank will get it back for you. You buy a new car that is faulty, bank will protect you... you order online and goods are different to order, bank will help you. you don't have that protection on a debit card. Any large purchase or online use credit, pay off in full and avoid interest unless in interest free period

I'm going to try that. Thank you
