Lease car - who is responsible for insurance?

I recently took out a car lease via a salary sacrifice scheme provided by my employer which includes insurance. The car is a 'used' car. It was delivered with no insurance documents but I was assured that the insurance was in place. I have asked for the certificate repeatedly as I do not feel comfortable driving without seeing evidence of its existence Today (after 3 weeks) I was finally sent the certificate which shows that the policy was valid from two days AFTER the car was delivered. I have sent a complaint which also included the fact that the car is still registered to the previous owner on the V5C. But I am wondering who would have been at fault had there been an incident in those two days. Me, for driving without having seen the certificate?, or the lease company for falsely claiming insurance was in place when it wasn't?

Nothing happened, so don't see why you're so bothered about it.

IF, something had happened, the lease firm would have been liable assuming you had evidence they claimed it was insured.

Anyway, motor dealers & leasing firms often have "umbrella" insurance policies in place which may have covered it anyway. When I bought my last car, an ex demo, it came with 7 days insurance as part of the deal under the dealership insurance to give me time to shop around and find the best deal for me.

It would be you at fault
There was one of these on a motorway cops type programme

If the car is provided by your employer, they should have a policy that covers car provision that includes arrangements for insurance.

If you're using the car for business use, the employer normally has a policy that includes all employees and all cars used for business purposes and usually private use too.

Or it should state alternative arrangements, but this would normally you taking out a policy. The lease company insuring vehicles sounds unusual.

It was probably on last year's insurance. I used to manage fleet's for businesses. When a car was bought / leased by a company I would log in to the company's MID portal and enter the reg on to the MID.

They will have renewed this year's insurance and then your car will be uploaded to the MID portal. If you're really concerned then ask them to download the list of cars on the MID for last year's insurance.

In terms of the V5, as long as the company has paperwork to show they own or lease the car then it is fine. We buy loads of vehicles from manufacturers under lease terms. The V5s have to stay in our name for 12 months as part of the terms. Only when the vehicle is 1 year old can the V5 be transferred in to the relevant name.

You are over-thinking it.
