Mortgage repaid

Name changed to post. Dh and I have repaid our mortgage on New Year’s Day with 7 years left on a 25 year term. I feel like we should be celebrating but it’s not something you can tell people in RL.

We paid ours off last week too. DH and I keep pointing at things and saying "see that wall? We own that", "that door is ours now" and so on.
It's a good feeling 😁

Well bloody done!

We were pretty much mortgage free in our last house (could have paid our mortgage off from savings). We then bought a much bigger house, and ironically people now thing we are minted because we live in a big posh house, when we have less money because we are servicing a bigger mortgage!

enjoy every minute:)

Well done! I’m so envious (but in a positive way!) I’m 45 and still have another 22 years to go 😭😭

eldorado02 · 07/01/2024 18:40

Congratulations!!

We managed the same nearly two years ago now and it’s such a good feeling to own a whole house in London, that can’t be taken away from us.

Same as many PP, we’ve told no one bar family, as we have friends who are renting despite saving hard for a deposit, plus a few more who stretched themselves and have now got giant mortgage payments each month, so I don’t want to be THAT person and come across as a smug git. Yes, we worked hard and did it all ourselves without any parental help or inheritance, but we were also very lucky in our endeavours and took chances that some people never have the opportunity to take.

Excellent news, congratulations…xx

Well done! What a nice feeling. Can I ask how old you and your DH are?

SheerLucks · 07/01/2024 19:00

Woohoo!! Celebrate like it's 1999!!

MrsMarzetti · 07/01/2024 19:01

We done. 💝

Hohofortherobbers · 07/01/2024 19:03

Congratulations! Welcome to the club, I joined last May Halo it's lovely to have this peace of mind, I had big plans for the extra cash, but I've got a bit too accustomed to being frugal. Grin

Nottodaty · 07/01/2024 19:05

Well done! We’ve started a plan to try and pay ours of earlier. We wanted to move but made the decision to stay and pay this house of sooner. It’s a 5-7 year plan 🤞🏻

TheUltima · 07/01/2024 19:11

Excellent news. We paid ours off a couple of years ago, and quickly built up some hefty savings. Which will now go towards a new mortgage on a detached house due to dickhead neighbours moving in 🙄 already calculating how quickly we can get rid of that one 😂

I’ve recently turned 50 and dh is nearly 50. We have 2 kids still at home.

We’re planning to give the house a general overhaul. We’ve considered moving but I’m glad we didn’t now.

well done! We paid ours off last year, and have only told one person, a friend of mine who is on a similar page. It’s worked out good timing for us as our kids are 14&15 so last year we had an expensive holiday and now we’re going to spend some time topping up our pension until uni fees strike. We didn’t celebrate at all, it felt a bit of an anticlimax tbh, I was expecting to feel different.

That’s how we felt as well. We haven’t told anyone as I remember how pissed off and jealous I was when a relative paid theirs off and was banging on about it so didn’t want to run anyone’s nose in it.

mysparkleismissing · 07/01/2024 22:23

Amazing!!! What a lovely feeling that must be

DoodleMum12 · 07/01/2024 22:34

We paid ours off 8 years early in 2020. A few months after we got a letter from the land registry confirming the mortgage charge has been removed. That was nice 😁we were looking at moving but now staying put and just improving the home we’re in. We’ve been in over 20 years so things like windows and doors need replacing. We had new carpets and a fireplace last year so it’s nice being able to just pay for these improvements when needed as no longer paying a mortgage payment!

To those with a mortgage - overpay when you can! It makes a huge difference. At first we were just paying an extra £20 a month and kept increasing when we could.

sansou · 07/01/2024 23:32

It's a great feeling! Congrats! Technically, we've paid off our mortgage 8 years early (25 yr term). We went on our first family skiing holiday that year to celebrate. We only shared the news with one set of friends who were in the same boat financially otherwise, we have kept it to ourselves.

Fluffyhoglets · 07/01/2024 23:38

Yes we're due to pay ours off with the next payment. Only a couple of years early as we had to borrow back some of the overpayment not long ago - but it's good to be free of it now.

Proseccoforever2024 · 07/01/2024 13:38

Thank you!! It’s weird as we’ve had no correspondence from the bank and our usual payment went out as a DD this month. We will celebrate but I think I need it to be official!!

Are you sure it's dd and not a standing order?

Yes, it’s a DD. We knew it would go out as it’s due on the 2nd and we only repaid on 1st. It will be refunded when the mortgage account is closed.
