What would you do with 100k?

Serious question although I'm totally expecting funny answers too.

What would you do with 100k to make the most of your future?

I'll add a brief poll but am looking for genuine answers.

To be fair , I'd probably just spend the £100k. I'd probably buy a car , a holiday and some home improvements. Then a few treats.

GrumpyOldCrone · 29/12/2023 15:13

I would spend some of it on a really nice holiday. The rest I would put in my children’s savings accounts.

DobbyRuth · 29/12/2023 15:20

Spend. But nothing for us! School fees, DIY and roof repairs 😅 Woo!

BrimfulOfMash · 29/12/2023 15:26

Put it in a high interest account pending my hoped for move to a better house in two years time!

Stripyunicorn · 29/12/2023 15:32

I've chosen spend, but mostly on house things.
We need a boiler (got an old style hot water tank and we want to change to a combi), then bathroom and kitchen probably need an update.
Rest would probably go into a high interest savings account and would pay off a chunk of the mortgage every year (to avoid early repayment fees).

Hairychristmas · 29/12/2023 15:35

I'd probably spend it on house improvements like rewiring and a new roof. Maybe a holiday. Then the rest towards the mortgage. Or maybe just clear the mortgage then save for the other things as they're not urgent.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 29/12/2023 15:41

Holiday, put some into savings, rest on the mortgage.

ErinAoife · 29/12/2023 15:46

Fix the plumbing in my house, landscape the garden,

CirreltheSquirrel · 29/12/2023 16:00

Pension (I've already paid off the mortgage and all other debt).

tokesqueen · 29/12/2023 16:28

We have no mortgage. Add it to my retirement fund. I'm going at 55 (three years!). Previously invested an inheritance for this very purpose then my 37 years in the NHS is done.

MyBigFatGreekSalad · 29/12/2023 16:31

Some in Premium bonds

Some in gold

A new bathroom and kitchen

And a few 'small' treats like a spa break, nice new handbag etc.

Wrapunzel · 29/12/2023 20:20

I've been in a similar situation this year (and have already listed mine on another thread)
My list was (approx/from memory)
Paid off DH's student loan £16k
Max out S&S ISAs £30k
Paid £3k off mortgage (made it a nice round number!), we have a ten year fix and lowish value so not a huge priority
Paid off a 0% credit card £6k from a holiday, (I had a plan to pay it back but this wasn't invoked!)
Some paying it forward/helping others/thank yous £4k
A new pony for DD whose old pony needed to retire £4k
£16k into premium bonds for self insurance for the horses and sinking funds for appliances etc
£5k on 2024 holidays
Started pensions for the kids £2.5k
£2k for home improvements
Some new wellies for me Grin

oneflewoverthe · 29/12/2023 20:21

It depends on your age, current financial situation and if you have any dependants.

franke · 29/12/2023 20:38

I recently came into a similar amount. I'm being a bit cautious with it at the moment.

Some has been earmarked to pay off the remainder of the mortgage in two years time. Most of the rest I've put into high interest savings for a couple of years while I decide what to do with it.

For the longer term, I've put about 20% into slightly riskier investments - a couple of tracker funds and a couple of sustainable, managed funds. Really enjoyed researching this and for the first time in my life feel as if I'm taking control of my finances.

My mum died last year leaving a wisely invested nest egg. She managed it all on her own so I intend to follow suit. Thanks mum ❤️

localnotail · 29/12/2023 20:42

I would deffo spend it to pay off part of my mortgage. Would be massively helpful!!!

Soerdu · 29/12/2023 23:49

Thank you for these replies.
I am coming into some bittersweet inheritance after losing a parent. I have 2 children and a mortgage. I have recently become disabled and so work is currently off the cards. Wondering how best to invest and plan for the future.
High interest savings and paying off some of the mortgage was all I had in mind but I am not very savvy with the best ways to use large amounts of money as I've never had them!

I received £100k and will soon receive a further £50k. It will all be invested in a long term bond

FunnysInLaJardin · 29/12/2023 23:53

to add, our mortgage is £220k and we both have good jobs, so not really worth using our capital to pay off our mortgage

PiggieWig · 29/12/2023 23:55

Sort my pension out, replace my kitchen and keep the rest aside as a buffer. Boring, but reassuring.

Gobimanchurian · 29/12/2023 23:57

1st 100k - pay off mortgage
2nd 100k - 3 teens Uni costs, would broadly cover all tuition plus contribution to rest
3rd 100k - 50% down payment on flat as 2nd home / holiday let nearby (south lakes / north wales / South Yorkshire)

I daydream a lot about lotto wins

Lysianthus · 30/12/2023 00:00

All on a deposit.

FunnysInLaJardin · 30/12/2023 00:02

DS1 is off to uni in September and so will equity release on our house to pay for that.

The capital won't be used at all. It is there to generate income for my retirement and will be up to around £700k in 3 years which will provide a nice retirement income of around £35k pa.

boredwithfoodprob · 30/12/2023 00:04

About 6/7 years ago I did, very fortunately inherit exactly 100k! It doesn't go as far as you might think 🤔
From memory, the big things I bought were:

A VW van (second hand).
A large new patio.
Extended my driveway to fit 2-3 cars (was initially 1) - this made life much easier.
A new bathroom.
A luxury holiday to Portugal with the kids to celebrate a big birthday.
A six week holiday with kids to Bangkok, Australia & New Zealand where we travelled round in a motor home.

Also smaller things I can't think of now. I didn't save any which maybe was a mistake but I'm generally happy and grateful with what I spent the money on.

Nat6999 · 30/12/2023 00:11

Put it towards buying a house of my own.

MintyCedric · 30/12/2023 00:14

£7k pay off debt

£10k invested for DD split between LISA/ISA and post office bonds

£13k savings - split between ISA and pension

£10k (max) home improvements

£15k 2025 fund - we’ve been able to do very little over the last few years due to pandemic, caring responsibilities, finances. DD and I both have big birthdays in 2025 so we’d have twelve months of catching up on the fun stuff!

Remaining £45k off the mortgage
