Do you think this is a travel insurance claim?

Flew back from holiday on day of Storm Ciaran. Planned to get the train home but all trains were cancelled for the whole day. No other public transport options available (c.300 miles).

Hired a car and claimed the cost of it back. Claim has been rejected for an unclear reason.

Is it worth pursuing? I've had my partial refund from my unused train ticket so only out of pocket about £80.

What's the excess on insurance?

disappearingfish · 07/12/2023 05:45

Zero excess.

What does the policy small print say about acts of god? That usually excuses them from coughing up for bad weather.

What does it say about pre authorisation?

You got back to your home country though? Travel insurance isn't meant to cover your trip back from the airport.

That’s not correct. Travel insurance covers every element of the travel - the clue’s in the name.

disappearingfish · 07/12/2023 06:36

Doesn't mention acts of god or pre-authorisation.

The travel disruption section looks like it only covers delays on the way to your holiday, not on the way home. I think it might just be a shit policy (it's part of a benefits package with my bank account).

The insurance policies included with credit cards are often quite limited. It completely depends on the Policy Disclosure Statement. Ask them to explain the basis on which the claim was denied.

Do you have a link to it? It will usually be in the bank's website somewhere.

It's this one:

It doesn't mention the return trip at all, such a strange omission. I think I'll cancel and buy a different policy in future.

Is it because the train company should refund you? My niece's train was cancelled on that day and she got a refund from the train company.

gotomomo · 07/12/2023 07:45

The train company needed to offer the alternative rather than your decision to hire a car eg lay on coaches.

disappearingfish · 07/12/2023 08:04

@gotomomo absolutely no chance of that. There wasn't a single train running to the whole of south west that day. Finding enough coaches to run people from the rest of the country to stations through to Penzance would be an impossible task.

As I said in my OP, I got a partial refund on my train ticket.

That's interesting, they do mention return journey, but only major delays at the departure point, not en route. That's a really horrible exclusion. You need to check out the particular details of that section a little bit more and see what it says about delays and cancellations once en-route.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 07/12/2023 23:47

They define departure point, as an airport, international train station or port for outwards and return journey and connections. So it looks like your cover might have ended at the return airport and did not include the train journey.

It is worth clarifying with them though, as they should set out exactly why the cover is denied.

That's exactly what I said. But was told I was wrong.

Quick update. I called them and they have agreed to cover the cost of the hire care minus the refund of my train ticket. However they won't cover the cost of the fuel that you have to put in the fecking car to drive the thing🙄

Honestly, they are shit.
