NHS pension

Trying to sort out my retirement/pensions today and in a muddle with it all.

I worked as a band 5 with the NHS from 2008 until 2015. Does anyone know how to work out what my NHS pension will be?

Think my annual salary was £24k

If you get in touch with the pension people they will send you an illustration , or they always used to

Looks as though you worked there for seven or eight years. Presumably you were in whichever defined benefit scheme was active at the time.

By 2015 a lot of public sector schemes were moving from Final Salary to Career Average. Whatever you are entitled to should increase with CPI until it's payable at 60 or 66/67 depending on the scheme.

NHS Business Services Authority should be able to help.

@Floralnomad I emailed last year and never heard anything back. It's on my list to chase it up again.

@Bromptotoo thank you will take a look at that.

The 2008 scheme is worked out at 1/60th of your pensionable pay per year. Then it's revalued each year but if you had 7 years service at 24k then that's 400 (24k/60) x 7 so your pension would be worth £2,800 a year before any revaluation. That won't be exactly right presumably you got increment in the 7 years even if the pay rises weren't much so your salary won't have been 24k exactly for the full 7 years but it'll be in that ball park.

Edit sorry 2008 scheme is actually reckonable pay not pensionable pay so it's 1/60 of the the average of your last three years but the ball park probably still works.

You could try ringing NHS pensions on 0300 3301 346. You should also be able to log in to the NHS pension members website and access your total rewards statement, although it can be a bit of a faff setting your logins up. I had to spend about an hour to set up my logins. I’d tried the day before when I was tired and failed miserably. Perseverance is key.

I recently asked for my NHS pension forcast. It came within a few weeks. Was actually a lot better than the last time I checked a few years ago. I'm going to try and last until I'm 60 before taking it.

Me too! But might down tools at 59 . You can go back to work in the NHS later if you want and continue drawing your pension. Used to be you couldn’t go back once you were drawing your pension.
