Hey guys,
I am currently in receipt of dla since 2023 aug we had a appeal so more dla from October. I am also staying in temporary accommodation and have no car as waiting on the mobility one. Due to my backdated payments and me not being able to spend as I am in a tight predicament, the money was piling up and now I have no idea what to do? I am not defrauding and definitely not doing anything wrong. Am I allowed to save dla? Until I move into my property?

Are you on a means tested benefit such as Universal Credit or Income Based ESA?

Just normal benefits as I haven't been moved to universal.

Look up the disregard rules for backdated pay, it probably doesn’t count for 12 months, after which point anything over 6k will probably start some king of tapered deduction.

But are they means tested eg 'legacy' ESA or Income Support?

The point I'm aiming for is that if you're on such benefits then there are disregards for benefit arrears so that even if your savings are over £6/£16k the whole amount may not count./

If you're getting tax credit at them moment I don't think there's a limit on savings, but when you're moved to UC there is, although they give you a 12 month grace period ( I think )
You can open an ISA and save some of the DLA in there for big things you may need to buy for your DC.

DragonFly98 · 01/12/2023 22:23

Do you mean dla for a child or do you mean pip for yourself?
Are you claiming ISA or income based ESA if so savings of more than £16k stop the benefit and more than £6k reduce it. However the back pay ( not the 4 weekly dla/pip) is ignored as income for 12 months.
