DH has worked since the age of 15 and is 65 next month, so it is literally a matter of hard graft on his behalf - my own contribution is tiny compared to his.
I am so proud of him. His parents were basically subsistence farmers. DH was denied many opportunities on the grounds that he was the only boy and thus expected to take over the farm.
I'm actually crying writing this as it's so momentous.
It can be done. Hang on in there!

Yay! Well done! Such a nice feeling. (I can imagine!)

sugarandsweetener · 01/12/2023 08:25

Fantina · 01/12/2023 08:27

Congratulations! What a wonderful feeling that must be.

🤣

RudsyFarmer · 01/12/2023 09:19

Fantastic!!!!!!!

if we threw all our savings at our mortgage we could pay it off. But we’ve discussed it and decided to let it run. There’s still a little bit of me though that likes the idea of having no more mortgage payments. Well done your husband xx

Dinoswearunderpants · 01/12/2023 09:23

So pleased for you both. What an incredible achievement. Enjoy the extra income :-)

Coastalcreeksider · 01/12/2023 09:28

It's one of the best feelings to know that the roof over your head is permanently yours not the bank or building society.

Next best feeling is the day you retire. 😁

Handovertothetedcross · 01/12/2023 09:29

How wonderful, very well done, must be an incredible feeling x

burnoutbabe · 01/12/2023 09:30

I paid mine off several years ago (it was a low rate and for ages I was offsetting savings with mortgage balance)

Think it was my most liked Facebook post ever!

It's a nice feeling, freedom from that worry.

I was lucky to have had a +0.1% base rate tracker for my mortgage
And never moved. Stayed in original flat.

SmugglersHaunt · 01/12/2023 09:31

Congratulations! Enjoy the moment. I paid mine off a few years ago and still get a warm feeling from it! Get yourself a bottle of bubbly and go on the land registry website in a few days - on your property listing it will say ‘no lender’ (or words to that effect)

winewinewine23 · 01/12/2023 10:25

Fantastic!! Bloody well done, especially to your DH. Enjoy the moment!

caringcarer · 01/12/2023 10:27

Well done. It's a great feeling. Like your DH we've both worked hard over many years. I paid mine off this year in July and I'm still surprised sometimes when I see how much is building up in our current account. We need to transfer some to savings accounts in the NY.

AHelpfulHand · 01/12/2023 10:28

We paid ours off about 4 years ago,

barely told anyone, didn’t feel we could really.

You put it on Facebook that you paid your mortgage off?

burnoutbabe · 01/12/2023 10:36

yes? isn't it something to be positive and celebrate?

its not like anyone would be particularly surprised, as i work in finance and am the one they come to for advice on mortgages and savings and pensions.

SingingSands · 01/12/2023 10:40

Congratulations OP! It must be a great feeling - actually owning your own home. A few more years for us and we will be done, have lived in this same house since we were newlyweds (before, actually). Can't wait to pay it off.

And well done @burnoutbabe! Absolutely get why you put it on Facebook - to share what you are proud of and your friends obviously agree!

Cotswoldbee · 01/12/2023 10:52

It is a great feeling! 👍

Paid off the mortgage on my first home about 15yrs ago (early forties) by making massive (or so it seemed at the time) overpayments.
With that done I concentrated on saving and paying into my pension.
Moved a couple of years ago and had to take out a new mortgage (bigger, more expensive house) but paid that off a few months ago so have had that joyful feeling twice now. Can't beat it. 🥳

Neddevine · 01/12/2023 11:05

Congratulations!! We paid ours off in October this year but I haven't told anyone irl (cost of living etc..) It still feels a bit surreal that it's really gone!!

Edited

We won't be telling anyone IRL either, since it seems too much like gloating. But we are going out for a nice dinner

Pinkpinkpink15 · 01/12/2023 12:06

Congratulations, especially to your DH with his more difficult start to his working life!!

celebratory dinner out sounds perfect!!

im not over paying mine because the interest is 2.58 & im hoping i can move, so will port that part & get less on the higher rate mortgage. I've got 4 years left on this fixed rate. If I don't move then I'll pay a chunk off then. I'll still have a mortgage but it won't be very much.

Are you happy in your house or do you think you'll move & get another mortgage??

Moveoverdarlin · 01/12/2023 12:15

I wouldn’t put that on Facebook in a million years. Why on earth does everyone you know need to know the finer details of your finances? I get that you’re proud, you should be, but that is so show-offy! What else do you inform them of? Tax rebates? Work bonus? Look how well I’m doing losers!!

Storynanny1 · 01/12/2023 12:29

Those two things happened on the same day for me so it certainly was an amazing feeling. I’d lost a house many years previously due to an abusive ( ex now of course) husband financing a ( failed) business by forging my signature for loans against the home, so buying my own and spending years overpaying by every penny I could made it even more satisfying.
I agree with others though about telling people, I only told my close family and a couple of friends in similar positions.

CloudPop · 01/12/2023 12:34

Congratulations! What a wonderfully liberating feeling that must be.

FizzyStream · 01/12/2023 12:51

Congrats OP! We're about to pay off ours in a month or so.

We bought our first house in 2011 and this one which will stay in until the kids leave (they're only 7 and 10 so ages yet) 8 years ago for £194k and it's now worth about £350k. I'm early 40s and DH mid 40s.

Looking forward to the relief. I fully appreciate the hard work of my DH which has made it possible. He's the higher earner and we've forgone holidays etc to get where we are which didn't really bother me. It'll be nice though to have the extra money to go on holidays abroad etc now the kids are older and will remember more.

I think DH has always been cautious because he hasn't got such a good or long standing pension as I have (20 years so far in the NHS) so wanted to get the house paid off to relieve that burden asap. No doubt the extra will go on the kids in one way or another but I realise we are extremely lucky. I don't think I'd put it on FB though.......

Enjoy! Flowers
