Bank querying large deposit (inheritance)

My DM passed away earlier in the year and I was granted letter of administration in June. The inheritance was about £100k going into my account and then off to pay some of my mortgage down.

Out of the blue the bank Have sent me a message querying where the large amount came from and asking for supporting documentation.

I know it is all perfectly reasonable to ask these questions but I'm worried why they would want to know now, after 6 months? Is this normal protocol and do I just send a copy of the letter of administration?

Normal - they are checking for money laundering. I had it happen too.

just send the proof and everything should be OK

It’s been normal for money laundering purposes, but we’ve always been asked at point of deposit. I always get asked when I deposit my annual tax rebate, and Dh did when he inherited - the solicitor mentioned to all inheritors that their individual banks were going to ask where the money came from and informed us of the need to keep the paperwork. - so I guess either the system glitched and you slipped through only to be discovered later in some internal audit process?!

It's normal although it looks like they have been a bit slow off the mark

Normal stuff around money laundering.

I had to provide loads of proof that my large lump sum came from selling my business. It made me wonder how criminals manage.

Thank you. I have an awful lot of other stress in my life at the moment and this tipped me into irrational panic.
I will send the letter of administration and details of the estate value.
DM also had £1000 cash which I deposited at the same time which bank is querying. She kept it under the bed for grandchildren and I have since distributed it. Do I just tell the bank exactly that?

Normal. Yes, just tell the bank exactly what you have written.

I had a lump sum from divorce and had to provide documents

TenderDandelions · 14/11/2023 17:37

Please don't worry. It's totally normal, and you will be able to provide information about your DM's death (sorry for your loss) to explain it.

The only surprise is the amount of time it's taken them to write to you. Barclays by any chance??

We had a query on one of our company transactions almost two years after it was received!
