I have a spreadsheet and I'm really trying to work out our spending money pot (not that there's hardly anything in it)!

Income
DH - £3.2k (paid 17th)
Me - £1.4k (paid end of month)
(Take home a month)

Outgoings from joint account - £2,831

Out goings from DH acc - £344

Outgoings from my acc - £473

If I put my salary into joint, then on the 17th DH puts in £1500. This leaves him with £1700, which we would split and he would transfer me £850. But with the outgoing from our personal accounts is this fair if we're trying to be 50/50.

A lot of the outgoings in my personal account are joint things but then also are from DH acc.

Your incomings are £4,600 a month, outgoings from joint/yours/husband is £3648

So there is £952 left for you to split.

If you are trying to split outgoings 50/50 it isn't possible as it's more than your salary

Get all of the things that are joint coming out of the joint account rather than it splitting across your personal accounts so it’s clearer.

Is the idea that you’re left with the same spends?

Any idea how we split what's left? I'm so confused. Because if we split 50/50 I will have £3 Grin

Ah I've tried but they're just hassle to switch the direct debit on them. I guess I could if that's what I really need to do. Yes, we're trying to split what's left over equally.

If there’s £952 to split, you should both be left with £476.

So I think you need to add enough from each of your salaries into the joint account to have that left.

Income
DH - £3.2k (paid 17th) - pays £2724 into joint
Me - £1.4k (paid end of month) - pays £924 into joint

Just have all your finances in one joint account and be done with it. All income goes in there, and all expenses come out. What's left over you can share between you, or it can be used for things like holiday savings, home repairs etc.

The only thing to look closely at would be if one of you has a very expensive hobby or pays a large amount into savings or investments and the other one doesn't, or if one of you is paying back a big loan or card debt.

Toooldtocareanymore · 09/11/2023 14:37

Am i understanding you correctly so splitting difference of what your dh has left over after putting 1.5 k into joint account ( 1.7k/2) and subtracting your outgoings from this, compared with his outgoings, is leaving you £129 less than him- although this doesn't take account of fact you put in 1.4 into the joint account and he puts in 1.5k, so really you are already another £50 better off - if we were to assume he matches you and fully splits difference, so we are discussing £79. Why not transfer responsibility of one of the outgoings to him for around this amount and then you are quits?

anythinginapinch · 09/11/2023 14:39

If you're married the. What's his is yours and vice versa.

IrresponsiblyCertainAboutSexualDimorphism · 09/11/2023 14:56

Get all joint DDs to come out of the joint account. It’s not that difficult to do.

Pay in a total of £4k per month to cover the debits and a bit extra for emergencies.
You pay in £1100 on payday
Your DH pays in £2900 on payday.
You’re each left £300 for discretionary spending.
Sweep any leftovers from the joint account into a joint savings account.

50/50 is not possible because you don’t earn enough.

GeneCity · 09/11/2023 20:48

It doesn't really matter what's paid from where.

Just split what's leftover evenly between you.

Heatherbell1978 · 10/11/2023 11:54

You really are over complicating this. Both salaries should go into one joint account. All bills paid from this one joint account. What is left is split equally.
