I have no idea for definite, but possibly it wouldn't affect things too much because (sorry to be insensitive) the policy presumably wouldn't pay out if you committed suicide.

Smurf, I have recently placed life insurance with friends Provident for someone who had bi polar depression. They increased the premium a bit due to the increased risk.
Can you say what the issue is on here. If you want I might be able to help.

choosyfloosy · 13/03/2008 00:27

Pricey - we've had to go for less cover than we'd ideally like for Dh, just can't afford more at the mo.

Coming back to this.

Nothing diagnosed. Lots of therapy though and muliple A&E attendances for self harm/overdoses.

mental health issues wouldn't necessarily impact premiums (my resolved depression didn't) but attempts to kill yourslef definately would.

smurfgirl · 13/03/2008 17:28

I have never really tried to kill myself though, just taken lots of tablets, but I have been admitted to hosp (a medical one not psychiatric) for it 7 times so thats going to look bad isn;t it?

For example they may put an exclusion on suicide so that if you committed suicide then the policy would pay out. Most policies have such an exclusion for the first year or two anyway to stop people taking policies out for that very reason anyway.
I am sure there will be someone who will offer life cover for you but it might cost more.
Changing tact abit, who is the major earner in your family if it is your partber than it will be more important to cover him than yourself, for the time being it could be in just the main earners name. You don't hav to cover both people though it would be best but needs must if you see what i mean

smurfgirl · 13/03/2008 22:39

I am the main earner.

Thanks.

At the end of the day it won't cost you anything if you apply for life cover, you only pay when you start the cover so you have nothing to lose by seeing what they say.
You also have 14 days or so to cancel the cover once it has started if you decide to change your mind as well.

Candlewax · 13/03/2008 23:47

Smurfgirl, one thing I would say is don't lie to any insurance company over any medical history because if they find out after your are dead, the policy becomes invalid and your family would get nothing.

BigGitHamsterKillingDad · 14/03/2008 10:50

I agree, chances are they will write to your doctor to assess your health anyway.
