Confused about State Pension statement

BeadedBubbles · 05/11/2023 12:14

I'm currently in receipt of a Civil Service pension and am due to get my state pension in 2025.

The govt website forecast is that I will get a state pension of £200.56 a week. It also says that I've previously been contracted out and my COPE estimate is £65 pw.

My understanding is that the COPE amount is already being paid to me via my work pension. So does that mean it will be deducted from my state pension? Or is it already reflected in my state pension forecast?

Grateful if anyone can clarify this for me!

@MidnightOnceMore the picture shows what it says - look under Pensions on our personal tax account page.

@MidnightOnceMore as I, and others, have explained the COPE figure has nothing to do with the basic state pension.

Step by step guide:
Step 1 click on this link https://www.gov.uk/check-state-pension
Step 2 click on the Green “start now” link
Step 3 log in, if necessary set up a government gateway account
Step 4 once logged in you should see the page @Soontobe60 has screen shotted for you
Step 5 the page will show at least one figure this is your earned state pension amount I.e. what you will get at state pension age. If this is less than £203.75 you will be told how many more years you need to get the full state pension.

Forget about COPE for the time being focus on your basic pension.

@Oldsu I was contracted out by a private employer, there never was an option not to. I worked part-time at the time and the saving that was put into my pension was less than £200 a year. There is no way that the equivalent over a few years even after 20 years of ‚growth’ will provide me with £14 per week in retirement (which is what my COPE says)

@messybutfun Is your pension provider giving you a yearly figure on how your pension is doing, if not request one so you can see for yourself the size of your pot, how much you get as an annuity will be influenced by your actual scheme, lifestyle, and how you decide to take it, so it will could change when you make these decisions, once you get your statement you could speak to your provider who can take you through your options, or you can speak to someone from Pension Wise (part of the the Governments Money Helper Scheme) who can give impartial advice.

How accurate are the state pension forecasts?

@India4 The pension service use your NI record which they get from HMRC so should be accurate

I have had contracted out employment and have just this year worked enough years-45 in total- to get the full state pension when I retire.

Sisterpita · 24/05/2024 20:40

@India4 the statements are clear it’s an estimate and the rules can change.
