High income child benefit tax charge and self assessment question

Liltzero · 04/11/2023 16:50

I claimed child benefit in the tax year 2022 - 2023 but realised in May this year via my P60 that I'd earned too much and would need to repay.

Unfortunately I missed the 5th October deadline for registering for Self Assessment but have now registered.

What happens next please? What should I do? Thank you

So you have registered and can now self assess? There is a calculator online you input your wage and see how much tax you owe. 22/23 tax is only due by end of Jan 24 so hopefully you should be okay. Any way you can overpay your pension to bring you under the 50k for this year?

You have until January 31st to file it online. By registering to do so you should have details,of how to complete it. Have you now opted put fo receiving cb payments or is your rise in income within the range where you may still get some.

Thanks for the replies.
I've now opted out of child benefit.
Paying extra into my pension kept me below the £50k threshold for the previous tax year but in going full time this is no longer do-able.
