Advice on young driver insurance

My daughter has just passed her test and has her own car but the cheapest insurance we have found is £3 k a year! And that's third party only. The car has a bigger engine than we'd like, plus we're in a new build so there's no history on our postcode which put my insurance up last year.

Had anyone got any tips for new driver insurance please and how we might get it cheaper?

Are you down on her insurance as a driver? That usually reduces the premiums (don't understand why!).

Have you got quotes from the firms specialising in younger drivers and the ones who'll reduce quotes for those happy to have a black box installed?

Other than that, I think it's too late for other options with her having already passed her test and bought a car.

We planned a few years in advance for our son. We kept an old car instead of part exchanging it, so had an "extra" car for a couple of years, with a big no claims bonus, and as soon as DS turned 17, we put him on the insurance for it, which was remarkably cheap to add him (just £200-£300 p.a. if I remember rightly). It was a lot more expensive when he passed his test (maybe another couple of hundred on top). But that was 4 years ago now, he's still using the same car, and only paying around £400 per year insurance for it, due to his years of history of no accidents/no fines, and also the no claims discount.

Have you tried fully comp quotes? Sometimes they are cheaper than third party for some reason....just depends on the algorithm that week.
Also, some insurers (I think direct line is one) allows you to have the policy in your name but have your daughter as the main driver. She will still earn NCB this way and then get her own policy next year.
Is black box an option? Not always best for everyone but something to consider for a discount.
Or sell the car and get one with a smaller engine/lower insurance group but run quotes first before buying, sometimes it doesn't make as much difference as you think it would.

Also, depending on when your insurance is due for renewal, you could try multicar policies such as admiral...it's worth phoning them up as they can explain how to do it with 2 policies with different start dates.

DS1 is the best at finding cheaper quotes. He found adding 3 additional drivers made it cheaper. So he has me, his Dad and a Grandparent.

Do the quotes include black box? Also agree that fully comp is often cheaper. But to be honest £3k is not far off for a new driver a lot of the time.

Get the insurance in her name and put the least risky driver in your family as a named driver (probably the oldest female with the longest claim free driving history)

Additional drivers with a clean licence and no accidents in last five years. Black box. Fully comp isn’t much more than third party so would always go fully comp. Pay as an annual payment rather than monthly - the extra percentage for paying by dd is quite significant on insurance over 2k as opposed to insurance which is maybe £300.

Just got a quote from Admiral for £14,000!

I feel for you. We are in the same boat but with a male. Quotes are coming in between 4k and 14k the car itself is only worth 4k! Our policy is up for renewal in the new year. Possibly we will wait till then.
Have you looked at Marmalade? If she is going to do less than 50% of the car’s journeys it might be an option for you. It won’t work for us as DS needed it for college. But they were ‘only’ £2600 as an add on to our existing insurance.
Daylight robbery!
