How much would you spend on a holiday?

Been discussing this with family. My preference is to do some European holidays however Florida came up. We have been before several times (10 years ago was last time). Basically it’s looking like a 10k holiday for 2 weeks - my thoughts are this is crazy money to spend for 2 weeks. Does anyone else have any limits they would spend on a holiday?

To get some balance in here, a holiday for 4 in Cornwall in summer hols with 2 sep holiday cottages is easily £1000-£2000 a week just for the cottage. Travel expenses by car train/eat in/eat out/buy food etc etc soonmounts up

There would be 3 of us.

When we went in past (10 years ago) it was just 2 of us. It cost £1.2k each for flights and 5* hotel plus £500 each for tickets to the parks. We then spent about another 2k on food , few purchases like clothes etc.

things seem to have risen a lot now , we are looking at about 2k each for flights and hotel (£6k) about 1.5k park tickets. Then food / other purchases on top so likely to be around 10k.

its affordable it’s just it pains me a little as I feel the money could go further in other places / ways.

we will likely do it anyway as want my DD to experience Florida as a kid. It is still by far the best holiday I have had personally. (Have been twice in past)

Wowsers😱….those flights are expensive…. I’m going to Australia at Christmas with a stop over at Singapore and paying 1450 each which I thought was expensive….can you book more in advance to pay less?

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 29/10/2023 22:29

We spent that in Florida a few years ago. We did stay onsite at Disney and went during the school holidays at a busy time though. It is an expensive holiday, but we had a fabulous time so no regrets about the cost.

£10k for Japan next year

burnoutbabe · 29/10/2023 22:35

Just spent £10k total on 2 adults, 19 days in Japan, China and Hong Kong. Flights £1500pp and budgeted around £150pn hotels, £100per day tickets and £100 food.

We did Orlando 10 nights for £6k.

Not sure I'd ever spend that much on Europe but then we can go out of peak season easily.

Domestic accommodation prices have increased enormously (never went down post Covid) but I've always found Cornwall quite expensive..
I don't count shopping at ordinary supermarkets a holiday expense though. Only the extra for a 'tourist' area. You need to buy food at home too.

We went to Florida this summer and it was £8k for 10 days - flights, hotel, universal access to 3 parks. Then spent 2k on food, airboat ride and shopping. That was 5 of us. We loved it and our dc were the perfect age. Price was the same as 2020 when we were originally supposed to go.

cakepip · 29/10/2023 22:02

@Lm1981 yes they have sadly, we were due to go in 2020 which was cancelled for obvious reasons, we were looking at £8.5K all in, we did almost the same holiday this year but opted for a value rather than a moderate Disney resort (due to loss of free dining) and it cost £12K as stated, a huge jump in such a short period. We had to vastly increase our spending money due to to inflation and exchange rate.

We had similar experience.

2020 - £8,500 (cancelled)
2021 - £10,500 (cancelled)
2022 - £12,500

Priced up for 2024 - £16,000!!!!!

These were all the same hotels, same flights, same airline, same time of year, same duration etc.

TeenLifeMum · 29/10/2023 22:44

I should have said it was 2 adults and 3dc.

TeenLifeMum · 29/10/2023 22:46

@FrangipaniBlue that’s odd. Our price for this summer was the same as 2020 in the same universal hotel. They went up massively 2022 but came back down so we booked last May for August, so I guess it was late for booking this kind of thing. We were going to Greece AI but that went up to £8k for 7 nights!!!

It depends on type, lenght, number of people etc. We’re going to Helsinki in a few weeks for four days, our budget is about £500 for flights, airbnb etc then no more than about £50-70 a day spending for two adults and two children.

Up to £70 a day for four people for food and activities in Helsinki? I think that is extremely optimistic.

Ringdoodledumpling · 29/10/2023 22:53

We spent £8k going to a European country this half term for a week. 2 adults 2 children. But of that £4k was on accommodation, £2k on flights etc and £1k on excursions. It just all adds up.

countdowntonap · 29/10/2023 22:56

This summer our mainly holiday was Greek island hopping for 2 adults and cost almost £12000. That was on top of a week in Madeira earlier in the year (£2000 2 adults) and lots of UK mini breaks - can’t calculate full amount as lots of casual spending.

afrikat · 29/10/2023 23:01

We spent about £10k on two weeks in Italy last year (4 of us). That was one week in a villa with 4 other families, fully catered, and one week in Eurocamp. Ate out alot. Flights and car hire were expensive

I've been to Florida several times and it's one of my favourite places ever. If you can afford it, do it

FrangipaniBlue · 29/10/2023 23:16

@TeenLifeMum the universal hotel was the only thing that more or less stayed similar..... Disney hotel and flights were pretty much all what made the difference!

TeenLifeMum · 29/10/2023 23:21

@FrangipaniBlue our flights were the same but we didn’t do Disney - Harry Potter fans here.

Thewifefury · 30/10/2023 00:28

We are literally on the last day of our 2 week holiday in Florida today. 3 of us. Last visited 11 years ago. 1 week in pop century 1 week cabana bay. It's been incredible and a really amazing (memories for life) but very expensive - weirdly once you been here a while you get used to everything being 50 dollars which is pretty much 40 quid. We saved to have £2.5k spending money so we can eat out without freaking out at the exchange rates. Cheapest meal 45 dollars basic pizzas (I think sharing 2) with drinks, and most expensive Disney's cape May - my 10 year old classified as an adult so that was about £170 with tip. Eye watering but we wanted one fancy place. We work hard to have nice holidays and if you love theme parks it is the ultimate adventure. Top tip book for when the dining plans are back after Jan 24 as we missed out on making big savings doing this. Also book flights way way in advance to get best prices. I haven't totted it up yet but I think it's £9-10k with the spending money. We obviously thought it was worth it. But will be in a tent for hols next year!

msmatcha · 30/10/2023 01:22

If the Florida holiday includes Disney tickets and a Disney hotel I have definitely spent that!

Simonjt · 30/10/2023 01:33

determinedtomakethiswork · 29/10/2023 22:53

It really isn’t, one of them is a toddler, a city pass works out at £50 for the adults, £25 for our son and £0 for our daughter. Its cheaper in Helsinki than where we live, so a supermarket shop will be cheaper than we’re used to.

Pinkmilkandcartoons · 30/10/2023 01:56

I usually spend under £2000 for 3 people. This year was about £1600 I think, last year was an amazing bargain of only about £1200! I do also allocate about £1000 for spending but don’t always spend it all. This includes flights, transfers, accommodation, food, 3 or 4 daytrips throughout the week, a couple of meals away from wherever we’re staying and snacks/drinks etc when out and about and a few small purchases of bits to bring home for memories sake. My teens save their own spending money to bring but that’s for whatever they want, the spends cover their holiday costs We are always happy with where we stay although others might not be if they’re used to more luxurious accommodations but it’s what I can afford and it means my 2 teens get a holiday abroad each year and they get to see some amazing things whilst we’re away too.

Debtfreegoals · 30/10/2023 08:09

I don’t think I’d ever go to Florida for that reason, just seems an insane amount of money. I think the maximum I’d pay for a holiday with our current circumstances would be £3,000 for Europe (family of 4) and it would have to be at least half board. That would have to be with a free child place.

Katy123456 · 30/10/2023 11:29

Not sure on the specifics of your trip but for a family trip with maybe 4 people, to florida for 2 weeks, presumably including Disney, £10k sounds about what I might be expecting. If I'm honest I would probably be expecting it to be more if you factor in school holidays and other activities.

I appreciate that's a lot of money for many people but I don't think you will get it lots cheaper.

funbags3 · 30/10/2023 11:34

I spent 8 grand on Florida last year which included 14-day tickets to Universal and Disney. This was for four people and a one-off.
We had a fantastic time. It's also extremely expensive when you get there so you'd have to take that into consideration.

Betty36 · 30/10/2023 11:42

£10,000 for 4 would be fine. I usually spend £4500 - £5000 but usually look for cheaper destinations.

pocketpairs · 30/10/2023 16:45

Agree with other posters, irrelevant what others spends as you don't know thier income and life choices. We usually spend £6-8k, but have spent £20k+, but there are 5 of us.
