Benefits and allowances

Asking for a friend. If someone in their 70s, self-employed with a small business, became unable to work through injury, could no longer drive and required assistance with personal care because of the injury and subsequent mental health problems, what benefits would you suggest their DP should investigate? How do people who have always been independent access services?

Is the DP also retirement age?

There are no out of work benefits for pensioners

bullseyeboat · 25/10/2023 22:57

Attendance allowance may be worth exploring

Butterkist8 · 25/10/2023 22:58

If they are over retirement age then there would be no benefits.

Butterkist8 · 25/10/2023 22:58

Other than disability.

@Butterkist8

not technically true as those on state pension with little savings could qualify for pension credit as well .

Butterkist8 · 25/10/2023 23:03

But it's not much .

Attendance Allowance , housing benefit, pension credit, council tax support (most councils have a discretionary fund). Adult social services at their local council would be the place to go where I am for help with accessing personal care and help around the house.
Get the doctor to involve the mental health team in his area, as around me , they are good at helping apply and pointing in the direction of benefits. Also helps with getting any aids needed.
If they have been in the armed services, trying a local group could be useful too.

Attendance allowance if they have difficulties with personal care, state pension ( assuming they qualify for one).

Ryansmrs · 25/10/2023 23:21

Attendance allowance and Carer's allowance for the person looking after them (if they qualify). Also, do they get full state pension? If not, are they entitled to pension credit and all the help that comes with it (council tax support?). Do they need a social care assessment to be carried out by the local council?

Very many thanks to you all. I shall try to tactfully pass on your information. "Oh, we're managing," is a laudable attitude, but it looks to me as though they need some help.
