Can anyone recommend a bank account I can open without going into a bank?

Sorry I’m not great with banking so I maybe being thick.

I need to open a bank account for my disabled daughter but it needs to be a joint account so I can access it as she doesn’t have capacity to deal with her own money. I have been advised to do this by adult social services. The issue is we live in a rural location and all the local banks have vanished so it’s tricky to go and to talk to a bank face to face. Because of DD’s disabilities it makes it hard to travel to a big town/city to a bank and to sit and go through everything.

Am I able to open an account without going to a branch? Can I open a joint account with the bank I already use (Barclays) without going into a branch with dd?

Monzo is all done online. To open a joint account you need to have a sole account first. Download the Monzo app, open two sole accounts and create a joint account. I’m not sure if you can close the sole account or just use it unused.

Starling too

First Direct is all online/telephone too.

Chase

Brumbies · 25/10/2023 21:03

Most of them can be opened online

Thisislifefornow · 25/10/2023 21:10

Monzo is great

Snooks1971 · 25/10/2023 21:10

Revolut also

Ohmylovejune · 25/10/2023 21:12

Monzo.

I've got this for foreign holidays and a second account if I ever need one.

blackbirdsinginginthenight · 25/10/2023 21:12

First Direct are great, I moved to them this year. I think they still have a £175 freebie for joining too

I have set up a monsoon account for myself but unsure if I can set one up for dd as she has no photo ID, no driving licence or passport.

Can open any online I think?

Flanjango · 25/10/2023 21:15

Santander did it all online. Then load the app and don't need to use branch at all. Set daughters up online by downloading birth certify and tax credit letters.

Chase is good

OK that would have been relevant in the OP. I think you will struggle with any bank then, you have to have ID. Even in person I had to take DD's ID and proof of address.

INeedAnotherName · 25/10/2023 21:17

I know you didn't ask this but do you have a Post Office nearby? I've just opened one without ID but they did want a linked bank account. I linked my Lloyd's main account to it.

EDIT, no idea if they do joint though.

moneymoney2023 · 25/10/2023 21:19

How old is she? Without a driving licence/passport, credit history etc it's unlikely she'll be electronically identified so you will need these documents even if you need to send copies electronically to the back via an app etc... proof of ID and Verification of address will be needed

Mouldyuck · 25/10/2023 21:22

Without photo ID it's tricky to open an account without going into branch. Not impossible though. I understand she doesn't have capacity to run the account but is she on the electoral role? In the bank I work for we can open an account solely based on that. Just thought I'd ask just in case

4catsaremylife · 25/10/2023 21:27

First direct have been brilliant with me

moanymandy · 25/10/2023 21:28

If your DD doesn't have capacity or any photo ID to open online I think you may struggle without legal authority (lasting Power of attorney or Court of Protection order). Have you looked into this at all? It will help you in the long run in making decisions on behalf of your DD (not just about finances) if she won't be able to do this independently.

Banks will have a process in place to accept non -standard ID, and will be able to tell you what they can accept. But the capacity limitations will be a barrier I would think.

I work in financial services and whilst there are ways to fly under the radar, like applying online. your best bet long term would be to get Court of protection (COP) in place.
Do you have DWP appointee in the interim to receive any benefits on DD's behalf?

Roystonv · 25/10/2023 21:36

If social services have suggested this do they have any info on how to do it. Also is there any relevant charity for your daughter's needs who you could contact. Whilst Google can be a pain it might help in this situation. Also money matters may not be the best place to ask bearing in mind the circumstances

She’s not 18 until March so I think it’s going to be tricky to open a joint account, most of them are saying 18+ and when I say she’s a student they are saying she needs a student account. The only photo ID she has is her student ID which they won’t except so it looks like we may have to go in branch to do it or wait until she turns 18. I am worrying because if anything happens to me she won’t have access to money. She did have an account but lost her card and was unable to conform personal details (she’s not very verbal) so her account has a block on it and I was advised to open a joint account. Nothing never seems to be easy 😬

Like Moanymandy says in her post, unless you have deputyship from The Court of Protection I'm not sure you can open an account in your daughter's name even as a joint account. Your DD lacks capacity so presumably cannot sign any agreements.

Topsyturvy33 · 25/10/2023 21:41

I did mine and dps NatWest joint online

Yes, I have looked into it and will be trying to get power of attorney but I can’t do that until she turns 18 (a few more months), I discussed with SS yesterday about who will be in charge of her money and the suggested that I will be because the other options would cost my dd money.

I am her appointee through DWP (for her PIP payments) and at the moment they go into my account but if anything happens to me no one can access her money to pay for any care she would need (I am her only carer, single parent).
