Does a CCJ affect basic DBS?

I'd like to apply for a basic DBS just because there's something I'd like to do and it would be helpful to have it. It's not necessary to have it.

Problem is that I may have a CCJ from 4 years back. It was because I was overcharged and I paid some of it but not all of it. I'm going to have to look into it and pay it if I do have a CCJ even if it's incorrect. I'd go to local court to check. I was sofa surfing at the time and terrified of bills and also indignant about being overcharged.

Would this affect basic DBS? Sorry, quite specialist question.

And my credit rating is so good at present ☹️

No, a CCJ won’t affect a DBS check. If you have a CCJ it will be on your credit file.

@LouOrange thank you.

I wanted to get the DBS. My credit rating is so good at present that I'm annoyed at it might have to drop if I have a CCJ 😡

But I need to look into it and pay if necessary. They tried to charge me for the previous tenants instead of just me and I was staying with a friend for a few months after that and so worried about bills. Everything else paid off but they were saying "it's not our concern if you have to pay for previous tenants, is it?" Real bullying tactics. I did a typical ostrich and avoided it after that. But need to get it sorted.

This is I think a misunderstanding 😄
Your credit rating is what it is and won't change if you discover that you have a CCJ as the credit rating agencies will already know and will have factored that in since a CCJ was awarded against you! That you are not certain makes no difference.

There are several free credit rating companies out there you can sign up for and they will tell you whether you have a CCJ or not. If you do, then you can pay and have it marked as fulfilled (better for credit rating) and it will stop being factored in after 5 years anyway.

It is also worth noting that there is technically no such thing as a credit rating / score - any time where you apply for rating (mortgage / credit card / loan / etc.) the company concerned may check one of the main credit agencies and see what they say - each company offering credit will have their own scoring factor which will differ from company to company and will certainly not be the same as the credit agencies and their scores... - The scores you see are a useful indication, but not absolute

Really? I think my best bet is to call into the estate agents who logged me as being 3 people instead of 1 and get letter of confirmation, check with local court to see if I have ccj, argue a bit with creditors if they still say I am 3 people (weird scenario) and provide documentation to back it up.

I was in hospital at the time that this all happened as well. They were so aggressive which is one of the reasons I have shied away from it. But I need to face up now.

Thanks for all the advice 🙂

The problem is that you are time limited to overturn a CCJ - pay in 30 days and it doesn't go on your file - after that you can pay and have it marked as paid but it stays on your file for 5 years - there is a mechanism by which you can go to court to have it removed if invalid, however it costs you money and if the CCJ is currently expiring anyway it might not be worth it... I would go and talk to the citizens advice bureau or go onto moneysavingexpert.com forum for advice...

As@akkakk stated, you don’t need to go to a court or estate agents or anywhere to see if you have a CCJ, register for a free credit check and it will tell you under public records if you have a CCJ.

Regardless, it won’t show on a DBS.

If you think your credit score is good, I am assuming you’re using one site to check your score?

Yes I'm using Experian

I haven't given 5 years credit though only 4.5.

I was escaping a domestic abuse (2017) situation although it was cowardly of me to not address this one bill of me 2019 (address was only in my name and no he did not visit).

I'm going to face up to my own mistake albeit I was ill and a bit traumatised and they were aggressive about this one bill. I should have negotiated and argued about it at the time.

Hope this makes sense.

Don’t apologise - everyone makes decisions which may not seem perfect when looked at with hindsight…

as above - if you are using Experian it will tell you if there is a CCJ Of you can then pay it off and then forget it

as others say it will have nothing to do with a DBS

IceCreamSundaeCat · 03/11/2023 13:01

Weirdly it turns out I don't have CCJ. Spoke to magistrates court on the phone. I'm still a bit suspicious so will call in in person next week!

So fingers crossed.
