What do I do?

Someone keeps throwing eggs at my conservatory window in my back garden and I'm worried that the glass will one day break.

This has been going on for a while now, but I've always assumed that it were kids. But it can't be as it keeps happening late at night - last night it happened at around 10pm.
Also, the length of the garden makes me believe that it can't be a kid as the person would have to be a very good thrower.

I'm really worried because I live in the house with just my ds and I'm concerned that someone doesn't like me for some reason - I don't even know the people in that house, they live behind my house on a different street.

What should I do? The police are likely to not take notice of a complaint.

Any advice please.

Many thanks

how bizarre.. can you keep a look out or is it too random?

stuffitllama · 08/03/2008 10:44

can you go to the house and say, have you seen anyone throwing eggs at my house as I'm popping into the police station later to report it?

would that scare them off?

Creole · 08/03/2008 10:54

It is random, but getting a bit frequent lately.

I was thinking of going round and having a quiet word, but I'm worried they might be violent. Also I am black and I am one of a few that owns my property, the rest are all council houses, esp. on that road - I get on well with my neighbours.

Just drove round the street and noticed that the suspected house has a big painting of the St George's flag on their rubbish bin.
It might not be anything, but I'm beginning to wonder....

poor you. How scary. I think I would ring my local police station for advice.

PABLOP · 08/03/2008 12:00

Oh no, I would definetley contact the police and see what they suggest, you should not have to put up with this behaviour whether it is petty kids or racists,

Creole · 08/03/2008 12:02

Yes, just called the police and they will be calling me back.

I'm beginning to think this must be a hate crime.

noddyholder · 08/03/2008 12:02

I think the police would take it seriously It sounds like intimidation and you have a young child and live alone.A camera would help to catch whoever is doing this Makes me so

Disenchanted · 08/03/2008 12:05

I think its a bit drastic to suggest someone lobbing eggs at your window is a hate crime TBH.

And also unfortunatly, lots of kids are allowed out at 10pm so I dont think you should assume its an adult either.

Someone eggs our car alot too, not anyone elses, but I just assume its kids messing. I wouldnt call the police over it.

Its crappy though isnt it? And dried egg is a pain to clean off too!

Could you leave a camcorder runing to try and cath whoever does it on tape?

PABLOP · 08/03/2008 12:08

It might be worth asking your neighbours if they've had any similar attacks, if you are being singled out they may keep a watch out for you. Let us know how you get on with the police.

dividedself · 08/03/2008 12:09

creole trolleo?

PABLOP · 08/03/2008 12:11

what?

Creole · 08/03/2008 12:11

Disenchanted, if you see the length of my garden, you would not think a kid can throw that far. Also the noise alone makes me think the person is using all their strength and can't be a child.

I am the only person going through this on my street, and I happen to be the only black, so what is it??

dividedself, I have been on mumsnet for years, so definately not a troll - do a search on me.

I am not offended though, because I know people are suspicious seen MrsGG.

Please don't walk away, I'm getting very concerned, I didn't sleep very well last night because of it.

Creole, I do not think its drastic to suggest its a hate crime, if its only happening to you. Do not let the police play it down either, it is obviously distressing for you.

Creole · 08/03/2008 12:18

I actually called them for advice and I stated that I'm not sure but just want to know what to do. The guy was very helpful and told me a few things the neighbourhood police may do.

I think there is more chance that the police will take it seriously as a race issue than if there was no issue of race at all. Perhaps this will give you some reassurance?

PABLOP · 08/03/2008 12:21

How rude of Disenchanted and dividedself, they are obviously bored.

Disenchanted · 08/03/2008 12:21

Im sorry but I just dont get why you would assume people are throwing eggs at your window because of your skin colour.

I understand you are scared and its not nice, But to call it a hate crime seems to me like you are jumping to conclusions.

You have no proof of the motive behind it, if you had recieved a letter with racist content, or someone had shouted something at you then of course you would have every right to label it that and to be outraged at it aswell! Racism is never, ever acceptable under any circumstances.

But looking at this objectivly then I just see someone is throwing eggs at your house.

Could be kids seeing how far they can throw because your garden is long, having competitions or something.

You could have unknowingly upset a neighbour over ANYTHING.

There are many reasons someone could be doing this, I think its just not right to assume that its a racist hate crime straight away.

I do think you should find out who is doing this though, must be very unnerving- especially as you say you are alone with your child

dividedself · 08/03/2008 12:21

Ok I don't need to search, I believe you and trolls don't upset me anyway. Just read thread and sniggered a little to myself when I got to the bit about the flag. Is almost comedic, although not - obviously - for you.

It does kind of read as though there is a black hating javelin thrower who is put past his bedtime throwing eggs from a house daubed with St George flags.

Disenchanted · 08/03/2008 12:22

And I agree with asking your neighbours too, how do you know they havent had it happen to them too?

Maybe ask them to keep an eye out if they see anybody around the back of your house at night?

Disenchanted · 08/03/2008 12:24

'a big painting of St Georges flag'

maybe they are football fans?!

Freckle · 08/03/2008 12:27

I think Creole has every reason to consider that this might be a racist act. She is the only black on her street; the people who live in the house which backs onto her garden have a St. George's flag painted on their bin (now I'm as patriotic as anyone when it comes to being English, but, ime, it is normally extremists who daub their flag on public items - generalisation which of course is dangerous, but still) and presumably the eggs can only come from their garden.

I hope the police can help as it must be very frightening when you are in the house alone with a small child.
