Is Lidl actually cheaper than Asda?

We’ve had an expensive month and I’m wondering if I should try Lidl for my weekly shop. I usually order online so it’s really convenient so I’m not convinced my time and actual reduction will be worth the effort.

For me ‘no’ simply because when I order online I tend to meal plan and just buy what I need. I tried switching from Ocado (which people think is expensive) to Lidl and I ended up spending a lot more by going in the shop and picking up things I wouldn’t normally buy. It’s not much cheaper than anywhere else, everywhere got expensive and for me shopping online saves me around £20 a week.

A £1 bar of chocolate in Asda costs the same as a £1 bar of chocolate in Lidls, see where I’m going here. If you want to make changes to how much you’re spending you’ll have to change what you eat.
take your budget then minus the full costs of toiletries, toilet rolls, and any other non food items, cereal, milk, bread etc then work out how much you can afford to spend on each lunch and each dinner throughout the week

VisionsOfSplendour · 14/10/2023 15:40

Totally depends on what you buy, try it and see is the only way to know

gamerchick · 14/10/2023 15:42

I don't find Lidl cheap tbh. Aldis cheaper and even that's creeping up.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 14/10/2023 15:47

I don't know about Lidl, but Aldi certainly is. On the rare occasions I have done my typical weekly shop at Tesco (whether online or in person) at Asda or Tesco, it always costs way more. Dh did the shop today actually and randomly decided to go to Tesco. He messaged me afterwards saying 'Shit - that was so expensive compared with Aldi!'.

LittleLlama · 14/10/2023 15:48

According to Which September 2023 - Aldi is the cheapest supermarket.

We use Lidl and have found fit it quite reasonable, but it doesn’t stock everything so you might have to go to another supermarket as well.

Meal planning is the best way we have found to reduce food costs.

Heh I had a mini tantrum in Tesco over some of their prices. It was a vow never to return moment. They're having a laugh man I swear.

I do a monthly shop at Lidl for long lasting stuff like Formil detergent, dishwasher tablets, toiletries, cooking chocolate, jam, frozen food, yoghurt, maybe a couple of bottles of wine, and vegetables for that week, and then do the weekly shopping in a supermarket that sticks the full range of everything.

WaitingfortheTardis · 14/10/2023 15:56

I'm unsure about Asda, but I've compared several like for like shops with Tescos and they have been virtually the same every time, only pennies between them.

Bromptotoo · 14/10/2023 16:12

Not sure whether Aldi or Lidl is cheaper but Aldi are very good for ordinary essentials; milk, meat, veg etc. But it's easy to chuck away everything you saved there on something in the offers aisle. Last one for me was a soldering iron

But presumably you needed one and it was cheaper than you could buy it elsewhere

I bought a top in Tesco today but that doesn't mean that the food element was more than a different supermarket

If course this doesn't apply if you're someone who can't control themselves in a middle aisle 😀,not sure if those people exist but they seem to be a comedy trope

Beautifulish · 14/10/2023 16:52

I think it is, utterly part of that is that you have to make do with what they have, less choice = money saved.

I think a lot of things are similar price to Asda own brand, but generally much better quality than the basics ranges in the other supermarkets.

piesforever · 14/10/2023 16:53

Lidl is the best!

gotomomo · 14/10/2023 16:57

Depends what you buy and convenience. I live very near lidl so it makes sense to shop 3-4 times a week, meaning very little waste and I take advantage of reduced to clear (they mark down at 2pm here which happens to be when I get home from work). Not everything is cheaper but most staples are. I'm not on a strict budget so buy what we fancy

WhineyVaginey · 14/10/2023 16:57

The bakery section in Lidl is lovely everything else is rank imho. Aldi meat, frozen is much nicer compared to my local Lidl

gotomomo · 14/10/2023 16:58

And Lidl laundry detergent is cheaper than Aldi

ToddlerMumma · 14/10/2023 17:01

I used to get Tesco delivery every week as I hate grocery shopping. But was spending £200+ per week
Switched to Aldi click & collect and now spend £115 instead and I can still order online. No delivery unfortunately but click & collect is a good compromise

morebranflakes · 14/10/2023 17:15

I don't know much about Lidl but Aldi is definitely cheaper than Asda.

SM4713 · 14/10/2023 17:18

Like others, I like the fresh bakery in Lidl, but find their fruit/veg awful- unless being used that day. Their grass fed steak- rump, sirloin and ribeye is lovely.

I've recently started ordering home delivery from sainsburys again- having not done so since pre-covid. I've been pleasantly surprised at the prices- many of which are price matched to Aldi! I can also get everything I want, whereas when I go to lidl- they only have a limited range. Not everything is cheaper at sainsburys, but I weigh that against driving to another shop when I go to lidl. Here are some examples:

Onions- Asda 90p/kg, Sainsburys 60p/kg
Skin on chicken thighs- 1kg Asda £3/kg, Sainsburys 1kg £2.85/kg, 2kg £2.15/kg

You can get onions cheaper than that in my asda, i know they are the budget range but an onions an onion for me

Dedsec2023 · 14/10/2023 18:06

id say its a mix, some items yes, other items no, especially if they do the price match etc

Dedsec2023 · 14/10/2023 18:07

its always worth while eg useing the website etc, to do a price comparison as and when your planning on doing your shopping etc.

SM4713 · 14/10/2023 18:22

@VisionsOfSplendour I would absolutely buy the essentials range for onions and other veg. My local asda is fairly large, but I've never seen 'essential onions' there, not even on their website. I need to shop at your asda 😃

TeenLifeMum · 15/10/2023 16:56

Thank you all. You’ve reminded me that when I tried Lidl years ago the veg was cheaper but only lasted 3 days so I ended up throwing quite a bit away. I think I’ll just be really selective re my Asda order and make cupcakes etc from what I have rather than pre wrapped stuff.
