My 18yo is on their 2nd part time job, the first was only a few weeks as it was horrendous all round. They are being taxed quite a bit although they are earning under the threshold. From what I can gather it's due to the first job not giving her a P45, there's no way she get them to give her one but I'm not sure how to help. Does anyone know what we should be doing to get it sorted without waiting till April?

She needs to phone HMRC or use the personal tax account portal to update her employment details and get the right tax code.

Do they have payslips from the first job? See if the job appears on Personal Tax Account - https://gov.uk/personal-tax-account Use that online account to inform HMRC that the job has ended (I think there is a link to click to say job ended).

Another way is to use Webchat with HMRC if that is available. They may be able to use the Chat Bot, using keywords like Wrong Tax Code.

Thank you both, the tax account show the previous job has ended and the tax code also reflects that. Think we'll need ti try and call hmrc next week

Similar problem for my DP, her teaching agency are applying tax on a Week 1 basis.

The tax code is correct, it's a specific figure taking account of the fact that she has other earnings - an occupational pension. Her payslip contains a message that she's on a temp code and that she needs to contact them. But when she does her contact just parrots a message that the code is supplied by HMRC.

I suspect they're missing, or have no processed, her new starter form but because of the 'its up to HMRC' mantra nobody is actually pinging the agency's payroll.
