Hi is anyone else trying to file self assessment tax from abroad? I want to send a paper return but it looks like form SA100 is not available on HMRC website?

thanks

So glad I saw this as I do my parents' self assessments and hadn't yet twigged that I couldn't just print them off like in previous years. (I would love to do them online but can't set up Gov gateway accounts for them as they don't have valid passports, driving licenses, credit cards etc so fail the Gov Gateway checks)

I called at 9.15 this morning and was only on hold for about 5 minutes. I did offer to take the post call survey by text (where I complained about having to call for forms) so that may have got me in a priority queue.

The forms apparently can take two weeks to arrive so anyone who needs one should call in the next week or so.

Why do they make us phone up? Why not put he form on the website. The post won’t meet the deadline.

I think it's part of a push to move people online. Most people who need to submit a tax return are tech savvy enough to be submitting online returns.

But some elderly people can't go online - my mum has Alzheimer's and my dad passed away in May but I still need to do tax returns for them as they get a small overseas pension. Gov gateway doesn't recognize them as they don't have valid passports etc so I have to do it by paper.

In my case it's not that I'm not tech savvy enough it's the fact If you are non-resident you can't submit online unless you use third party software. I resent having to pay for that. I would love to be able to submit online and it makes absolutely no sense that you can't do it because you live abroad. It's even worse now that you can't download the forms (why is that anyway?) as many people abroad have issues with the reliability of the postal service so receiving the paper forms in the first place isn't guaranteed either.

@Icedblondelatte how much does the software cost as the fine for not submitting by 31/10 is £100?

I don't understand why the SA100 is not online when all the supplementary pages are. It seems nonsensical and it hasn't been publicized at all as far as I can see. If I hadn't seen this thread last night I wouldn't know until I went to print the forms off next week.

The problem is they have a Gov Gateway system that can only verify identities using limited means eg passports and UK credit checks. If you can't pass both of those you can't do online returns and are now at risk of a £100 fine because they removed the form from their website without reaching out to all the people who download it each year.

Have half a mind to contact the press about it. I bet there are thousands who end up with a £100 fine because, by the time they realise the form isn't online, it's too late to get one sent to them.

I think the third party software is relatively cheap so definitely worth paying for it rather than paying the late fine.

Touty · 05/10/2023 17:56

I bought 3rd party software but it was useless as you still have to use gov gateway didn’t work through it.
