2 jobs+tax free allowance + universal credit

I work on a casual basis but its PAYE. I was working one agency, but have now been taken on by an agency closer to home. I planned to give notice at the first agency but lost my nerve as the work wasn't initially coming in as readily as it had been with the first agency but its picking up.

So now I am being paid PAYE by both agencies which is way more complicated than id like but 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️. I can only work a couple of days a week as I'm a carer, if I work my time with one agency I won't work for the other so two agencies doesnt mean more money.

I should be under the income tax threshold (especially as there are parts of the year I cant work at all) but I've noticed on the payslip for the second job I'm paying small amounts of tax. I claim Universal Credit. I notified UC of my rough hours at the start but told them it was seasonal but havent make contact about the second agency because I presumed they contact HRMC ongoing anyway.

Does anyone know the implications of the 2 jobs for either universal credit or tax? Should I be notifying people?

If both jobs are formal employment with properly managed PAYE and amounts paid reported to HMRC then Universal Credit should manage OK. They'll have multiple sets of earnings but the system should consolidate them within each monthly AP. You need to watch what happens though to make sure it stays in kilter.

Tax codes are provided to the employer by HMRC. You need to speak to them and ask what they can do so that, for example, your Personal Allowance is split across both jobs.

Thank you. That seems significantly clearer than anything I've tried to find online. I've just got progressively more confused.

Both are proper PAYE. I will make contact with the tax office

If you have a government gateway account you can manage your tax code online. You just enter your expected earnings in each employment and it should work it out for you. What it does is allow you some personal allowance in each employment, as mentioned above.

If you don’t already have a gateway account you can create one.

Would that be the same as the numbers for self assessment? I think I have one of those for years back

If you’ve done a self assessment return in the past you probably do have a gateway account. Your username will be a string of numbers, is that what you mean?
