HMRC Elderly parents Self Assessment

Is it possible for me to complete their self assessments on their behalf so we save on accountant's fees? They are relatively straight forward with interest , pension and rental income. I thought i could register as a trusted help but not sure that gives access to SAs....being a "tax agent" looks much more involved / complicated?

Do it online, nobody is going to check.
I do my Husband’s SA.

Yep, just do it via their online HMRC govt gateway login/Personal tax account.

You can't register as a tax agent as then you'd need to prove things like professional indemnity insurance as it's aimed at accountancy/tax businesses, not relatives.

Do you have POA?

as others said, do it online - sit with them and set up the account, then you can input the figures etc and then pay the tax.

It might be worth applying for POA though for at any stage in the future that they can't do this type of stuff, it doesn't have to be actioned until you need it - but then it would make life easier for you and much cheaper than alternative ways

@OloOloOlo If your parents haven’t already registered for self assessment for 2022/23 you need to move quickly as the deadline is 5 October. Actually completing the self assessment can be done later, the deadline is 31 Jan 2024.

I sat with my Mum last week and set up her Gmt Gateway Account and filled in the registering for self assessment. I stated on the self assessment application form I was filling it in.

The problem is a lot of pensioners will be finding they have more than £10,000 in savings interest and so it’s compulsory to do self assessment. This is due to savings interest having increased so much in the last couple of years.

When it comes to completing 5he self assessment I will do this online with my Mum sat next to me and print it out so she can check it before I then submit it.
