Negative Tax Free Amount

Hello,

I've recently started a new job with a significant pay increase. I have never checked my hmrc tax page (I'm PAYE so have always just left these to payroll) however logged in because I'm on an emergency tax code and my "tax free amount" is £-18000. I'm a bit worried about what this means there's no way I can owe the tax man £18k, I've only been in the job 2 months!

Any help interpreting this would be appreciated.
Tia

Have you got a previous payslip to see what it was at your last place? Or can you see this from logging in?

New jobs do tend to mess with HMRC. I recently started a new job and HMRC has my estimated earnings at 74k with the tax I'm expected to pay at 21k. In reality, I will earn less than half of that so I don't know where it has pulled this from.

Your tax free amount depends on personal circumstances such as taxable benefits... company car, private health etc etc.

Just call them.

As others say, the only way around this is to ask HMRC to check it out and give you a breakdown of the code you have been given.

Call HMRC its the only way to know. Does the new job come with a car, medical insurance etc?
