Other half has just started a new job. He's received his first payslip but the deductions seem high. Gross pay £2048 less tax £577.40, Employers NI £258.48, Employees NI £108.62, NET £1361.98. Is this correct. The tax code is 1257L. Thanks very much in advance.

The tax looks high

Is it 1257L W1/M1?

Did he supply a P45?

Is there any pensions / student loan deductions?

Thanks so much for your reply. I've attached a photo of the payslip. It's his first paye position as he's been self employed in the past.

This is a weekly payslip which is why the tax is high

Ihateboris · 25/09/2023 15:29

So it is correct then? Thanks again, really appreciate your quick reply 👍

Yes it correct - as it will assume he earns this every week

Employers NI is not a deduction from his salary, only employee NI

Did he really work the 100hrs he's been paid for?

Ihateboris · 25/09/2023 16:16

It's for two weeks. He works 10 hour days, 5 days a week. The payslip confused us as well.

It's for two weeks (50 hours per week- 5 x 10 hour days).

Cor that's rare these days - fortnightly pay. Hope it works out for him

TeenagersAngst · 25/09/2023 16:21

Also tax code looks ok, not emergency. 1257L is the standard code for people with one job, it's the £12570 personal allowance that most people are entitled to.

Thanks for the explanation. Much appreciated

It's been calculated as a weekly thing so if he earned that every week he would be getting over £100k per year so well into the Higher Rate.

If he doesn't earn that every week he will be able to claim back any overpayments at the end of the tax year

Thanks, it's actually for a two week period (50 hours per week).
