Hi, daughter started her first job on 4th September after finishing college
£8 per hour for 6.5 hours per day Mon-Fri on pro-rata basis
Gets paid on 25th Sept, £876.60
Can someone more knowledgeable than me confirm thats right as her wage slip is very basic, thanks

Not enough info for people to be able to tell you!

SorryWorry · 22/09/2023 19:07

Is she paid every four weeks or monthly?

KateyCuckoo · 22/09/2023 19:09

Other questions...

What is the payment period?

What is her tax code?

What do you mean by pro rata? (I know what the word means, I'm trying to establish what you mean)

NoSquirrels · 22/09/2023 19:12

Doesn’t sound wrong particularly - depends on the pay period, if she’s paid in advance or arrears etc.

6.5x£8 =£52
16 days Mon-Fri between 04/09 and 25/09
£52x16 = £832

xyzandabc · 22/09/2023 19:16

Depends on a lot of things.

Does the pay cover 4-25 sept or 4-30 sept.
What tax code is she on?

You say her wage slip is basic but it must have more on it than just the net pay. What else is on it?

hevs03 · 22/09/2023 19:18

Thank you
Her contract states she will be paid pro-rata & on the 25th of each month, term time only, she doesn't earn enough to be taxed as far as I'm aware.
I just wanted to double check, as maths is not my strong point
She is loving the job (although catching headlice in her first week wasnt great 😬)

You say 6 5 hrs per day and pro rata. Is she working in a school by any chance? If so what's her contract? Is it term time only? Term time plus x weeks, or 52 weeks a year? Does she get an unpaid lunch break?

hevs03 · 22/09/2023 19:20

A nursery
Unpaid lunch break for 30 mins
Thanks

So she's only being paid 38 weeks plus 5.6 ish weeks holiday. That makes a big difference.

6.5 X 5 X 8 = 260 per week.

260 X 43.6 = 11363 per year

11363/12 = 944.66 per month

Minus a bit because she started on the 4th and a pension contribution. It's probably not far off the mark.

xyzandabc · 22/09/2023 19:26

If the unpaid lunch is included in the 6.5 hours, then just change the 6.5 in my calculations to 6.

hevs03 · 22/09/2023 19:52

Thank you everyone your help is much appreciated (she can buy her own headlice treatment from.now on 😆)

Make sure they have the correct tax code and that it's not an emergency code as it's her first job so they might put that then forget to change it over

She Shouldn't be paying tax for the few thousand she earns so thats good.

NI will come off

HappiDaze · 22/09/2023 20:01

I'm glad she likes her job that's the most important thing really

Yes and of course pension deductions

HappiDaze · 22/09/2023 20:56

I mean for the first few thousand she earns in the tax year till she's eligible to pay the tax as it were once it hits the threshold
