How did you choose your house insurance

I am not sure if I am unreasonable but I'm more interested in having cover for anything that might go wrong with the house rather than getting the cheapest insurance I can or insuring contents and furniture.

Who do you insure with and why did you choose them?

Comparison site to run them against each other, we always include all the legal cover etc. I think we use Compare The Market. We are belt and braces type people so every tick box is ticked.

I just used our banks home insurance which covers everything, can't be bothered with shopping around and having to estimate how much everything is worth.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 21/09/2023 18:36

could I ask who you chose please?

We went with Direct Line which didn’t come up on any comparison site I found.

PosterBoy · 22/09/2023 08:26

I look at the cover and always include things like

legal cover

Costs to locate a leak - think it's called track and trace or something like that

I then tend to stay with the same company, so I choose someone well known, as house issues eg subsidence can cross years.

We re-run the details saved from last year in compare the market.
Look at the cheapest first. Discard any names we don't know, and look at the lowest price, big name, details more carefully.

Direct line aren't on ANY comparison sites, so we wouldn't go with them, because I'm too lazy to input the details again.

We bought our first property 47 years ago and always used to get top of the range insurance. Had one claim, 35 years ago on the contents, and have never had to claim on the buildings insurance. The premium on the contents insurance rise after the claim, so what is the point? You end up paying for your own ckaim via increased premiums. Shortly after the claim, we started a business and put all our money into that and reassessed what we were paying out. We then moved onto a cheaper policy, ensuring all serious stuff covered, like subsidence, but not paying for all the little extras like central heating cover etc. We pay less than £100 to have our boiler serviced by a local heating engineer, and pay for other repairs as we go. Put the money you save on the premium into a repairs account. The money is there if you need it, and if not, you still have the money plus interest.

I use a broker and we also go for a top policy, I don't scrimp on insurance

ShanghaiDiva · 25/09/2023 17:07

Comparison site and also have a look on Which?
we are currently with Saga. We tend to find that premium is decent in year one and then small increase in year 2 with large proposed increase in year 3 and this is when I swap to another company. This is with no claims!

Two criteria this time:

  1. recommendation from someone who has had to make a major flooding claim and found the company to be very responsive
  2. cover for uni students away from home

Halifax.
