Sterling new driver insurance

Does anybody use this company for car insurance for a newly passed driver? My DS has had it for several months and every day when it scores your driving you get a message saying something like "your renewal premium has gone up/down by 65p because of how you drove yesterday. If you had to renew today it would be £X but if you keep driving well your renewal quote will be as low as £Y"

But in the last week or so they've stopped giving updates about the price altogether. They just tell you if your driving was good or bad. We did a supermarket comparison as someone who had passed a year ago with one year no claims discount and it's £500 more than when he passed! 😰

Is it due to CoL? What are others finding?

We did notice that the renewal estimate had gradually crept up higher over the last few weeks despite good driving. We assumed it was due to inflation, but it's concerning that they've stopped giving updates on price altogether now.

Has DS asked Sterling why the updates have stopped?

PerfectYear321 · 10/09/2023 11:35

No, he's away at the minute but he will do when he's back. It just came to my mind because they just sent a message saying "you didn't drive yesterday!" with a big smiley face. Usually this brings the quote down by £1.65 but today no mention at all.

Just wondering if any new drivers have renewed after the first year recently and their premium has actually gone up?

To update, I phoned them today and they said the insurer will not be taking on any new policies. That's why the renewal updates have stopped. I read an article today that young drivers can expect to see their insurance increase by 65% this year. This seems about right from my comparison site search. It's crazy that before this inflation crisis it would have gone DOWN by a few hundred!

My daughter just renewed mid August, she passed her test a year before at 17 and is with Churchill with the telematics app, hers went down from £1230 to £830 which I thought was good, I presume due to her driving scores, she has a mini cooper 1.6.
I think she was lucky as new searches were all coming in at same price as what paid last year or more.

Thanks for replying. I was going to say that's encouraging then I read where you said other quotes were coming in same price as last year or more, so that's way better than we're seeing.

Then again, we live in one of the worst places in the UK (yes, the UK, not England 😵‍💫) for road safety apparently. Found this out last week 😩😭
