My DD18's NI number seems to have been used fraudulently

Is this possible?

My DD18 has been working part time over the summer. She goes to Uni in a few weeks as a full time student.

She received her tax code notice today 313T, I'm guessing this is wrong so we need to advise HMRC of this. However, when I set up her Government Gateway and signed in to her account I noticed 4 unknown employers, dating from 2021 who she definitely hasn't worked for before (this is her first and only job). One for a McDonalds franchise in Norwich, one for an Irish Comedy Club also in Norwich, and one for Blue Arrow Temp agency.

There are earnings attached, again definitely not hers, amounting to around £3k, and because of this incorrect tax code she is now paying tax on her actual earnings!

Been trying to get through to HMRC but they are incredibly busy and we are left hanging on and then cut off each time. Going to try first thing in the morning to see if we can get through.

Has this happened to anyone else? Would be grateful for any info or advice. TIA

No advice on the situation but from needing to sort something with HMRC in the past I can confirm calling first thing is the best way to get through. I've never had a problem getting through at 8am, and never managed to get through at any other time of the day!

@YouLetDougalDoAFuneral thank you so much, yes will ring first thing on Monday in that case.

Try actionfraud. They are there for identity theft etc.

I’d also make a police report tbh.

AncientQuercus · 01/09/2023 19:40

Not likely to be fraudulent. More likely somebody has made a mistake with one digit of their NI number. Used to work for HMRC and it was amazingly common for people to insist they were using the right number when it was someone else's. More of an issue for the other person as their record will be short.

AdoraBell · 01/09/2023 19:43

Hopefully it’s a mistake as suggested by AncientQuercus speak to them early on Monday.

Hopingforagreatescape · 01/09/2023 19:45

Looks like someone has somehow got their NI number wrong - or their employer has typed it in wrong somewhere along the line. Definitely call HMRC because not only have you now got the wrong tax code, but the other person needs their NI contributions recorded to their correct account!

ninetieseyebrows · 01/09/2023 19:45

@AncientQuercus ah I see, that sounds plausible. Hopefully just a simple mistake in that case. I will report on Monday, hope they can find the other person through the employer. Thanks so much for settling my mind - I was thinking of identity theft too @Thisismynewusername1 !

Same happened to me, you need to check her credit asap. Try trans union.
They had taken out houses in my name and all kinds of credit. I didn't find out for a long time

GrumpyPanda · 01/09/2023 19:57

Could you also try to alert the employers given all the detail you've got?

ninetieseyebrows · 01/09/2023 20:14

@nationallampoons that's really concerning. So sorry that happened to you! Will look further into this thank you

@GrumpyPanda good idea! Will see what HMRC say and see if they will contact them as part of the procedure

No advice OP, but just wanted to say every time I've contacted HMRC they've been really really helpful, so hopefully they'll get you and DD sorted on Monday.

It’s worth your DD getting into the habit of each January checking the previous tax year records. Much better to it as an annual check than unpick decades.
