Anyone ever got a refund for a faulty good after the year guarantee?

My 4yo dishwasher caught fire and Zanussi aren't that interested as its out of its year guanrantee. But I found some stuff on the internet that said the Sale of Goods Act gives you extra protection after the standard year, and that a large white good should be expected to last for 6 years. I'm going to write to Zanussi and tell them this. Just wondering though whether to give up hope of a refund/replacement and bite the bullet and buy a new dishwasher.

Which Legal Service are fab on this sort of thing, SKSS. You have to pay for a 3 or 6 month subscription but it's not that much, then you can speak to an actual lawyer and they will tell you what you're entitled to and suggest wording & phrases.

We got £500 back from Safestore when their roof leaked and ruined some of our stuff - because we hadn't paid for their insurance they were refusing to give us any compensation, but Which said it wasn't an insurance issue, it was negligence & breach of contract, and after several exchanges of letters they finally paid up (just after I'd mentioned receiving advice from Which, funnily enough )

DH found these people helpful

I think catching fire is rather different to it breaking down
This is the 3rd Zanussi I have heard of catching fire btw

My neighbour used to have a Zanussi d/w years ago and hers caught fire too - it's something to do with the wiring getting pinched when the door opens & closes.

I think with most makes, as the plastic coating gets rubbed it shorts out and stops working (my Bosch did) but Zanussi seem to have different electrics.

If you do get something out of Zanussi it's more likely to be a new d/w than cash...

That's a very useful looking site, TB - don't they publicise it much? I've never come across it before.

i got a full cash refund for a maclaren buggy that was 16 months old...

got a full cash refund for price paid even though it had gone down in price a few months earlier and i had no receipt

i just had to argue a lot with mothercare (who originally were going to charge me for the buggy to even be sent to maclaren )
