Taking out debt for dh

Snowrush · 19/08/2023 20:15

If your dh needed to take a loan but couldn’t get a good rate, would you take it in your name to help him out and to achieve a better rate?

dh is honest and trustworthy and marriage is solid btw

How much is it for? Being as we have a mortgage together yes l would.

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 19/08/2023 20:17

Depending on what it was for of course

Mrsteaside · 19/08/2023 20:26

Yep. All of our household debt is in my name as I get better rates than dh. Our mortgage is joint but the car loan, kitchen and 2x credit cards are all in my name. We just think of it as ‘our debt’.

dh is the highest earner but has a CCj from a parking ticket meaning that obtaining credit is difficult. He actually pays all of the debts each month but on paper it’s all in my name

I suppose it would depend on what the loan was for. My first husband would keep running up credit card/unauthorised overdraft debts then taking out loans to clear it all. Then run the debts up again. So in that case, no I wouldn't. If, however, it was for a car or house repairs/new kitchen, I maybe would if it was affordable.

I have no problem in having our joint debt in my sole name. We're a partnership, I trust him, yadda yadda.

But why does he need to take a loan? A loan just for him?

LeafHunter · 19/08/2023 20:41

We share money so it wouldn’t come up for us - I’d be very confused if he said he needed a loan. Is he buying/paying for something that is just for him?!

winterchills · 19/08/2023 20:47

It would completely depend on circumstances for me

Ponderingwindow · 19/08/2023 20:49

Can’t think of a circumstance worthy of a loan where only my husband would need a loan.

MillWood85 · 19/08/2023 20:56

Why can't he get a good rate? I think that would be a big part of my decision.

whenwilltheysee · 19/08/2023 21:04

yes, I have a loan out for my husband's car. He's self employed so it was going to be extra hoops to jump through. But it would depend on what it was for and why he couldn't get a loan.
