Family mobile phone costs

Clara101 · 17/08/2023 12:28

Does anyone have advice on how to get family mobile costs down. DP, DD and I all have handsets so contract just needs to cover line rental.

We are currently paying total of @£80 pcm with different contracts for each of us with EE and O2.

Is it cheaper if you combine them? Recommendations on who does good packages? 🙏🙏

Sky mobile SIM only family sharing. Great value and excellent way to ensure everyone has enough data without overpaying

pilesofpaper · 17/08/2023 12:34

We pay £11 each a month and £7 for DC.

amiold · 17/08/2023 12:35

£80 each or total??

Do you have any workplace discounts you could use?

Gobimanchurian · 17/08/2023 12:46

If lower data usage : Sky Mobile's cheapest deal is £7 a month for 3gb of data with free calls and texts. Unused data goes into a piggy bank and can be added onto any sim at any time. It uses the O2 network.

If higher data usage I'd go for VOXI which uses the Vodafone network. You can get sim only high data deals for £10 or £12 a month with some data streams (music, social media) included.

Bromptotoo · 17/08/2023 13:10

SIM only is way to go.

May be worth keeping it across more than one network if you're often in areas where coverage is patchy.

Bookchildtable · 17/08/2023 13:36

I pay less than £15 for three sims with smarty. Its £6 each but then I think it's about a £1 off for two of them if they're all linked plus any unused data you get a reduction on your bill. So usually around £15. I actually think they're are cheaper plans (according to Martin Lewis email) but I haven't bothered Changing as its good value for money and I've had good service.

Whattodowithallthebooks · 17/08/2023 13:42

We have 3 sim only contracts with tesco for £34 a month with decent amounts of data. It's cheaper if you have a clubcard

We have 4 contracts with o2. Sim only, 10GB data, £5 each a month. Then you get 10% off the 2nd, 3rd and 4th due to family discount.

We add disney plus and amazon prime as add ons as you save £2 each by subscribing through o2.

I used this comparison site, they change really regularly but you can change every 30 days so I keep checking and update whenever a better deal comes up. www.uswitch.com/mobiles/compare/sim_only_deals/?inset-cookie-banner&utm_accountid=5303720174&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=sim%20only%20deals&utm_cmpid=11496073618&utm_adgid=112235093717&utm_tgtid=kwd-30565830&utm_mt=b&utm_adid=513282513798&utm_dvc=m&utm_ntwk=g&utm_plcmnt=&utm_locphysid=9045811&utm_locintid=&utm_feeditemid=&utm_devicemdl=&utm_plcmnttgt=&gclid=CjwKCAjwivemBhBhEiwAJxNWN9DtcS65O60fj0suhtglTNRnyZSfvuSQZxPMNyjKqBL32t9TdTybWhoCylcQAvD_BwE

Read this, especially the bit about who provides the network for all the secondary suppliers and thinking about how much data you actually need.

There's obviously no point paying for what you don't use, but at the same time, you don't ever want to go over because out of bundle costs can be huge, although for the cheap SIM only providers, it tends to just stop and you can't use data until you pay for another bundle.

Tesco mobile here, £12 per sim per month with 60gb data each, that’s with club card discount and £1 off each sim per month for a family deal.

It is a lot of data for me as I’m always connected to Wi-Fi as a rule but DC use theirs at school/out and about.

HoldingPatterns · 18/08/2023 05:19

I’ve locked the usage down, no monetary buffer at all, but you can set an allowance for additional data costs with Tesco should you run out.

tribpot · 18/08/2023 06:08

We have three contracts with Tesco Mobile for £27.50 a month. I'm expecting this to go up as we move DS on to a bigger data plan for uni, but might try to persuade DH he doesn't need the 12 gig of data he insists on having despite hardly ever leaving the house 🙄

I really rate Tesco but coverage is key.

weathervane1 · 18/08/2023 06:22

Two people, O2 via Tescos costs us £9 each a month for unlimited everything. - this includes a £1 off each person each month as a family perk. We sometimes go over this if we're sending too many MMS picture messages but other than that our total bill is always £20 or less each month.

poorbutgood · 18/08/2023 06:39

We are on giffgaff, 4 of us, £28 a month. I have a £10 goody bag (need mobile data for work) and the others have £6 ones m
Runs off the O2 network so signal generally good

Ambi · 18/08/2023 06:48

Giffgaff. DH and DD1 are on the £10pm one each and DD2 is on the £8pm one. It's not a contract and really easy to change depending on use. They use the O2 network.

gogomoto · 18/08/2023 07:05

We are all on giffgaff £10 a month package. It's plenty

gogomoto · 18/08/2023 07:07

Oh and giffgaff at time of typing as free in eu still, most aren't!

RandomMess · 18/08/2023 07:09

I have had 2 nightmares with Tesco recently porting numbers so would say avoid after being a fan of them for nearly 20 years!!

They are no longer the cheapest anyway.

Definitely look into this sort of thing if you travel abroad. Also, which countries are included in roaming. I go to the Isle of Man fairly regularly and the first time I went after switching to one of the Sim Onlys (can't remember which) my phone didn't work at all. So I'm now with ID mobile because I can use my allowances as normal there.

WhenLifeGivesYouLimes · 18/08/2023 07:24

We're with EE. £33 quid for four of us for 20gb each (and we can lend unused data between us in the unlikely event that one of us runs out).

RandomMess · 18/08/2023 09:29

I had an 02 one recently that included all of USA - that was a welcome surprise considering an E-sim was £20.

The contract was £16 per month though. Yes absolutely you need to look more closely if you travel abroad a lot.

Iamnotanugget · 18/08/2023 10:16

We're all with ID mobile. All on 1 month SIM only contracts. DH doesn't need data so his is only £3.99 a month, I like to have 10gb and pay £7. The 4 of us comes to £21.99 a month. It's not a package, they are individual contracts. Think about how much data you need and go from there. I usually buy some extra data if we're going on holiday, ID is very flexible

FlamingYam · 18/08/2023 11:28

EE are the most expensive provider, I find. I think because they offer coverage in dead spots for other networks. Where my mum lives, they are the only network to get coverage.

We are all with Tesco mobile and whilst mine and DPs are not linked, his and DDs are and they get some sort of discount. We just signed DD up to a 60gb sim only contract and I think it was £17/20 quid.

I get my phone from sky as it was the cheapest - they offer 0 cost sim so you can get full benefit and the phones are unlocked. They sound like a great company with sharing data tho. That would help DD and I a lot. DP only has 3gb and never goes over.

Clara101 · 18/08/2023 13:02

Thx v much for these suggestions!!
