Do mortgage providers ever waive redemption fees in case of death?

That's it really. MIL died last year and if we pay off what's left of the mortgage, we'd cop for about £4,000 in early payment fees. Someone said they can exercise discretion in cases like this, but first attempt at discussion (on phone) met with a blanket 'no.' Any suggestions for what to try next?

Write to the Customer Service Director/Manager explaining the situation and that you weren't happy with the way this was handled on the phone.

I work for a recently publicised mortgage lender and our guidelines are they are not waived but there is always managerial discretion

No FIL. She was a widow. Yorkiegirl, did you try to get them to waive the fees, or did you just pay up because it seemed to be the norm? And because, frankly, you probably had more important things to worry about at the time.
hedgehog, that's worth knowing. I think they should be waived - it's not like we're paying it off to go elsewhere for a better rate, but then that's business for you, I suppose.
