Is the " entitled too" calculator correct?

Hi everyone.

I start a new job in September which is going from 13 hours to 35 hours per week which I think is great for myself personal growth and all that but also to not heavily rely on benefits however I still do need some help.

I've put all my information in on entitled too and it's basically saying that i will
Still earn £1307 off benefits and earn £1283 off work.

I am a single parent house hold with 1 child. I have 85% back paid on childcare and I also get housing benefit.

I've just included all my income outgoings etc filled it out correctly but it still seems like I'll be getting too much from benefits? Although yes I need it due to childcare and rent coming to £1250 most months anyway.

I worked out that they'd be able to take £483 for the 55p of every pound after £379?

Is it accurate and am I over thinking? I mean I just like to know where I stand and I've been panicking incase I end up worse off working full time even though it's better to not rely.

If you are in an area with a high LHA rate and you have a lot of childcare costs, then yes, it is likely to be correct.

Cross checked using a professional tool (QBC).

Splitting your £1250 between rent and childcare gives a similar result to yours.

Child Tax Credits are hells delight to calculate.

One reason UC is better!!

purplebluediscorain · 07/08/2023 11:15

@Bromptotoo i don’t have anything to do with child tax credits all just UC! My child’s only almost 2. I’m hoping to still be entitled to 15 free hours to just lighten the load! I’m so glad I’m working full time as it’s term time only but it’s such a mindfield!

The threshold of what they will pay towards childcare has just increased and if you have a high LHA rate it’s probably right.

I get £1700 from wages and still get £800 in UC. Working parents who rent are definitely better off on UC

Danikm151 · 07/08/2023 19:08

That’s with 30 hours funded childcare too. If I didn’t get the funded hours it would be close to £1000

If you don't mind me asking- how?

I'm pretty much forced to go back to work (baby is only 7 months oldSad) and I'm currently getting UC. I'm not getting much because I'm still on MA. I get half of my rent paid on UC (£395 out of the £795, we are anticipating for the rent to go up soon though).

I did the calculation and if I go back to work and take home roughly £1500-1700 I won't get anything?

misssunshine4040 · 07/08/2023 20:03

@ElisMum9397 are you a single parent?

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 07/08/2023 20:06

The only bit entitled to gets wrong for me is council tax support.

Did you add childcare costs into the calculation or will you not have childcare costs?

Wishitsnows · 07/08/2023 20:47

Wow that’s loads no wonder you are querying it. Sounds like it’s right, crazy!

Danikm151 · 07/08/2023 20:55

@ElisMum9397 maternity allowance reduces UC £ for £.

i get single person element
child element
childcare( Uc covers £450)
rent of £436
total £1500 or thereabouts.

work allowance is £379 so remainder of wages deducts 55p for every £1
approx £700 leaving £800 UC.

if you have a partner both wages are taken into account.

The only bit entitled to gets wrong for me is council tax support.

Given that support for Council Tax is different between each of the UK's constituent nations and, at least in England, each Council has its own scheme that's not too much of a surprise.

There are still a few councils with decent schemes but most expect the claimant to pay 20-50%.

As a professional adviser the best you can do is tell folks they might get some help and to come back if they get an egregious knock back.
