Cash machine transaction completed, no money came out but debited from my account.

Today I withdrew £40 from a cash machine, transaction processed normally until, after getting my card from the slot and waiting for the cash, the machine made whirring noises for around 30 seconds before declaring itself out of order!
Luckily it was inside a bank and I could call the manager, who assured me that in 99% of cases the money wasn't actually debited.
I wasn't happy with this as it had shown as a completed transaction, so I got a mini statement from my own HSBC bank a street away, which clearly showed it had been debited, and took it back to Natwest.
Unfortunately, it was just before 1 and the banks close at 1 on a Saturday, so I couldn't raise a dispute with my own bank - I'd assumed the dispute needed to be raised at Natwest because that was the cashpoint I used.
Now I'm just really anxious - the manager told me it may just drop off as a debit by Monday, but then, she'd also told me that she was 99% certain it wouldn't have debited my account.
I have contacted my bank via chat, and they have said they can't do anything until Monday.
Has this happened to anyone else, and if it has, how long did it take to sort?
The cash machine seemed to be working perfectly fine when I went back to Natwest, so I can only hope the next customer didn't end up with my £40 as a bonus!

Hey ex bank worker. What normally happens in most cases is that overnight the ATM will recalibrate itself and the funds will be returned to your bank account. If it does happen on Monday contact your bank and raise an arm dispute form and the money is usually back in your account within 48 hours. If having that money missing means your incurred bank charges etc you can raise a complaint also and the bank will usually reimburse these.

Hope this helps

Sorry I meant if that does not happen contact your bank on Monday.

@Riverbananacarrot thank you so much!
Does it happen quite often?
The manager was so certain that it wouldn't debit my account, but it has.
Would it reverse over the weekend, or working days only?
It just made me so anxious, I definitely can't afford to lose £40!

This happened to me years ago but my balance was corrected a day or so later. Can’t remember the exact timescale but it was quick!

Farmageddon · 05/08/2023 21:28

Yes this happened to me also a few years ago, with €200 😱I was freaking out but when I went into my own bank they said that it should be credited back in a day or so, and it was.

BCSurvivor · 05/08/2023 21:32

@Farmageddon £200...oh my goodness!!!
I'm so stressed about £40, if it was hundreds my anxiety would be through the roof!!!

Hi. Same thing and money was credited back in the next working day. Seem to think there is some sort of camera or scanner that sees the money doesn't pass over, and it refunds the transaction.

Ladybug17 · 05/08/2023 21:54

Same thing happened to me but nothing was taken and within 3 working days everything was back to normal although the transaction was in my 'pending transactions.'

Bromptotoo · 05/08/2023 22:02

I had something similar a few years ago. The machine dispensed the cash but the slot to pick it from was not where I expected. Spotted it just as the machine sucked it back in again after a timeout was passed.

It was a small amount at a time I'd way too much to worry about and I'd not got the energy etc to get fussed but I think it was re-credited after a couple of days.

purplecorkheart · 05/08/2023 22:09

I had that happen a while ago and it was back in my account in 72 hours. It was an atm from a different bank than the chain I bank with so I think that may have been why it took a bit longer.

BCSurvivor · 05/08/2023 22:19

@purplecorkheart yes, mine's the same - Natwest machine, but I bank with HSBC, it's just longer to worry about it!

I did this years ago but I stupidly forgot to take the money! I can’t remember how long it took but the debit did reverse itself.

MortifiedSeptember · 06/08/2023 22:34

Similar thing happened to me too. However, I was told the machine registered a time out. I apparently took to long to take the cash. It was £250.
What kind of person would wait that long? The woman on the phone made me doubt myself. But the money was refunded in less than the 10 working days they quoted.

Once 10+ years ago I helped my grandmother withdraw some money £70 and I noticed there was no £10. So I went inside with grandmother and reported the mistake the machine made. Grandmother was refunded her £10. And my name was cleared. Grandmother believed me before the investigation took place. That is when I first learnt that machines make errors and even malfunction at times. They are fallible like us humans. We just trust them more.

BCSurvivor · 07/08/2023 08:07

@MortifiedSeptember that's what makes me anxious in advance, not being believed!
The manager at the bank - not my bank - where it happened told me that she was 99.9% certain it wouldn't have registered on my account as a debit.
It has.
And then she told me that even if it had it would probably reverse itself within 24 hours.
It hasn't.
So now I have to go to my bank this morning to lodge a dispute....I could probably do it over the phone, but I'd feel better going into the actual bank rather than lodging a dispute with a call centre.
So frustrating.
I'm self employed with small margins, so that missing £40 could tip me into the red.

As an update on this, the money is STILL showing as debited from my account.
I went to my bank branch yesterday to log an official ATM dispute, but have been told it may take up to ten working days to receive my (own) money back into my account, and that's only if successful.
I have a note from the manager at the different bank where it happened, to say she was aware that I didn't receive my money from the machine, and a mobile number, but I was told this couldn't be added to my dispute!
Really frustrating.
