So my partner and myself moved in with each other 3 years ago. She sold her house and purchased out new house, we share the mortgage 50/50 + bills.

At the time of moving in, partner extended her mortgage to pay for some new furniture, half this cost was £2400, I offered to pay £200 per month to cover my half of the cost which she accepted.

Move forward to renewal of mortgage I discover that I have been paying a monthly cost to the extension on the mortgage for 3 years as well as paying the £2400 in the first year.

Upon talking about this with partner, she initially dismmised this and made attempts to close the conversation, I made a second attempt to ask questions like why I'm paying twice and surely the answer is she pays back £2400 and I continue paying half towards the extension of the mortgage.

Partner is now threatening to end the relationship, sell the house and pay me back all my contributions to the house without any further conversation about the subject.

What's your thoughts on this?

Your solution for her to repay the £2400 would be sensible. Did she double charge you by mistake or not? Partner saying she will repay you and break up is just an attempt to stop you asking for your refund. Call her bluff and say ok if you only want me for my financial contribution we'll call it a day. See what she says. Hopefully she will see sense and just refund you.

My thoughts are that, if she doesn’t have an innocent explanation that she gives you freely, trust would be gone and so would the relationship.

Thank you for you thoughts. I will do this!

She was aware of this, she did say that when we first moved we were all excited and rushing around, but she was always in control of the finances and I believe she knew full well about this. I think she took my financial integrity for granted.

Her extreme reaction suggests it's already over tbh. Unless she made a very innocent mistake and you overreacted when questioning her?

It's seems obvious if the mortgage was extended then you are already paying it back via the repayments...but that would be over (say) 25 years, so you'd actually only pay it back in full if you remained together for the term of the mortgage. This could be the reason she wanted the money returned "up front"...?

I would wonder if she is like this in other ways with money, and if not it could be a mistake on her part, but is she is a little devious/ greedy with money in other aspects, then maybe it was deliberate.

I don’t understand what’s happened here. You owed her £2400 which was 12 months at £200. Why didn’t you stop paying after the 12 months?
