Why am I such a wankpuffin with money?

Is it just me, or is anyone else completely frigging useless with their money!

i’m 39 and reasonably educated with a good job. Other areas of my life are well managed but I’m just so incredibly shit with money. when I get paid I go into this fucking ridiculous “ I’m rich” mindset.

i get paid in 14 days and have £460 left in my account. Don’t get me wrong, £460 is fine as my bills are all paid, however I should have a lot more than that

does anyone else just continually fuck up with money like this?

Can you put together a spreadsheet of what you're spending/wasting it on?
Monzo or Starling account so you can see all the spending categories and set up pots for savings etc?
Though I confess I mainly clicked your thread due to a love of the term 'wankpuffin' which I intend to use regularly in conversation forthwith

Quitelikeit · 12/07/2023 16:08

How much do you earn a month and how much is your mortgage and bills?

a few nights out a takeaway, fuel and food shopping could clear that £460 fairly swiftly!

Hugasauras · 12/07/2023 16:09

Do you have ADHD, OP? Impulsive buying is one of the symptoms and one I struggle with. In general, buying stuff gives a rush of dopamine too and makes us feel good. I've struggled with this a lot too and am still finding the balance. I either fritter or I get absolutely hung up about any and all spending. I find that forcing myself to wait 24 hours from putting something in my online basket or whatever to checking out helps a lot. Sometimes the urge has passed by then.

MMorales · 12/07/2023 16:09

I'm the same but with admin.

I'm really good at everything including cash.

But when it comes to filling in a form I fall to pieces. I think its PTSD from when I had to fill out forms for student finance. Still brings me out in a cold sweat.

If I just had someone who could fill out all the forms for me, my life would run so much smoother.

This. If you see that you are spending (for example) £200 per month on coffee then it may shock you into action

For the eleventh-billionth time I will recommend YNAB … it’s pretty much perfect for this payday-rich, mid-month broke’ cycle, imo.

This! Ynab always!

TinaTotal · 12/07/2023 19:46

I think I would be better with money if I had more money and less kids.

I have adhd and bpd so I've got no flipping chance. Despite being better with money being constantly on my mind.

truthhurts23 · 12/07/2023 19:58

wankpuffin 😂
what do you spend the money on ? i have started leaving my card at home and only having cash, using contactless makes you forget how much you are spending

MLMsuperfan · 12/07/2023 20:45

Plan your spending on indulgences ahead of time.

KisstheTeapot14 · 12/07/2023 20:50

Use cash. Have a little notebook and write down what you want to buy. Have a cooling off period. Do you really want these things after a week/2 weeks? Think I'm a bit ADHD and if in shop I can't decide what to buy (say 5 items) I often used to buy them all then feel a bit sick as it was an impulse buy. It's easily done.

Have savings goals. Try not to go to the shop or website of temptation. Or limit it to what you think reasonable - 3 x a year?

Ididntknowuntiliknew · 12/07/2023 20:52

Lemieux7 · 12/07/2023 20:55

Yes. I have autism and ADHD.

BounceyB · 12/07/2023 21:01

I have ADHD too and used to have the problem with impulse spending. 20 years ago I was earning £70k. At the time it was a lot and it didn't help that everyone would point out that if I had money I should spend it?

My wake-up call was divorce. I had to get my money in order because I had no choice. I think when it comes to ADHD and money, for me there had to be a bigger motivation than just save money because it's the sensible thing to do.

Workbabysleeprepeat · 12/07/2023 21:14

Love wankpuffin too! And yes I have this exact problem so following with interest. I hated YNAB but I need something to make me accountable.

pavillion1 · 12/07/2023 21:23

i feel like i do the same but really its just that on every payday i pay everything that needs sorting for the month a head . it really does put a dent in it tho .

BuffaloCauliflower · 13/07/2023 12:36

Another vote for YNAB. Life changing.

Augend23 · 13/07/2023 12:39

I'm a big fan of moving money into savings on pay day. Stops you feeling rich on payday and therefore hopefully stops mad spend. If you want to you could move almost everything and move a bit back every week.

I've heard it termed "pay yourself first".

But what is it?!

Hugasauras · 13/07/2023 13:02

I really want to like and use YNAB but I have tried several times and just cannot figure it out. Maybe it just doesn't work for our pattern of income or maybe I've just not grasped it, but I've spent a lot of time grappling with it to no avail, while waiting for it to 'click'.

BuffaloCauliflower · 13/07/2023 13:22

@Summerhillsquare its a method of budgeting, short for You Need A Budget. It’s an app and on web browser, but underpinned by a method.

@Hugasauras have you tried watching any of the YouTube videos explaining? I found those really helpful when I started

Hugasauras · 13/07/2023 13:24

I might brave them. I'm a reading learner generally, I don't really like watching videos about stuff, but perhaps this is something that does require a video!

LaylaLjungberg · 13/07/2023 13:39

I save 25% of my wages and then feel free to be a wankpuffin with the rest. Try that, you won’t feel guilty.
