Can national paper print my brothers personal details?

My brother lives in Amsterdam, and had that Mark Dixie as a tenant for 3 months or so.

The Sun paper, have printed my brothers details in one of the stories about this Dixie, printing the town we are from, his age etc.

Are they allowed to do this without permission?

TIA

yes, they are as much of the info is public knowledge - on the electoral roll etc. you may have a case though if they are insinuating your brother has done something wrong himself. Poor you - it's a horrible situation to b in.

pucca · 25/02/2008 08:34

No they not insinuating my brother has done anything wrong, but my brother did end up having a fight with this guy (knocked him out cold) which alot of people will applaud, but who knows who is reading this paper, and there may well be a comeback.

They also quoted my brother as saying "if i knew then what i know now, i would have finished him off".

Did your brother speak to the press? Where did that quote come from?
I can't find the story you talk about online so can't tell much more. If you are worried, contact the Press Complaints Commission and ask them - they will probably say your bother has to make a complaint to them himself as he is the affected party.

Mark Dixie murdered and then raped a young girl called Sally Anne. He is now known to have raped other women.

He Has just been sentenced to life, if you search Mark Dixie, you will find loads.

Thanks for answering Oranges

Oh I know who Mark Dixie is - I just couldn't find the relevant story about your brother (ie his landlord). I'm not surprised you don't want to be associated with the whole thing.

Hope you get it resolved. FWIW, it is worth complaining to the PCC about this because even if The Sun have not done anything illegal, the PCC do want to build up examples of how the public are affected, as the regulations are being changed.

Good luck

I have tried to find the story but can't now, it was in yesterdays edition.

it's good its not easily available online.

Do please get your brother to complain to the PCC though - they need formal complaints to update their guidelines on these kind of issues. Details of your town etc were unnecessary to the essence of the Mark Dixie story and obviously caused your family some distress.

Cappuccino · 25/02/2008 13:07

if he has actually spoken to them I can't see how you can complain

wannaBe · 25/02/2008 13:13

unfortunately, if you speak to the press then you run the risk that they will misquote you.

If they've printed your brother's details and made up quotes without actually having spoken to him then you can complain to the pcc, but alternatively don't think he has a leg to stand on, sorry.

oranges · 25/02/2008 13:20

i found the story pucca. it looks like your brother and friend spoke to journalists voluntarily nd gave them their full names and ages, and the info about your town is very vague, so don't think a complaint would be upheld. Sorry.

If he didn't speak to them, definitely complain to the pcc.
Hope The Sun give you a response too. Do tell them your brother will be complaining to the PCC.

pucca · 25/02/2008 13:47

My brother had a big fallout with this guy, he was a lodger in my brothers house, my brother did knock him out he had big problems with him and they have quoted my brother as saying if i can remember it something along the lines of "if i had known i would have finished him off".

Maybe i am overreacting, but when anyone could find out family just by looking in the phone book, it is slightly unnerving.

yes.
BIL was assaulted at work (he is a prison officer) and for some reason the Sun ran a story on it. he didn't speak to them, but a neighbour told my sister they'd been sniffing round for info.

they got his age wrong - 10 years too young - he was quite pleased with that bit.
