Morning Mumsnetters

Eldest girl off to university in August. She will be going off my universal credit claim next month as far as I’m aware and off my child benefit claim. Can anyone help me figure out how much i will lose for her. It’s worrying me as google is telling me it’s quite a substantial amount 🙁 I have another 2 kids, 13 and 11

Don't panic OP. You own your house outright and have scope to work more hours. Unless you have bad health

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/07/2023 20:57

With two children at secondary school as others have said you need to increase your hours

Dressinthewindow · 11/07/2023 22:12

Yes will definitely increase hours

thanks mumsnetters 🥰

I was surprised at how much my outgoings went down when my dd went to university.

Less washing was a big one. She's not a bit eater but I still found myself noticing not having to buy things she likes. She's the only one who drinks coffee for example. No school expenses, less petrol from driving her places. If we get a takeaway it's 25% cheaper,

Both my friend's DDs moved out within a few weeks of each other. Friend was gobsmacked by how much her electricity went down.

They were shockers though, they'd run the washing machine with just a couple of tops and a pair of jeans in, would wash stuff that they wanted to wear later that day so had to tumble dry it, took long showers (electric shower) and were always leaving stuff switched on.

The bill went down by two-thirds, but there were still friend and her DH living there.

I'm surprised how much others' expenses go down when DCs move out!

Maybe I didn't spend enough on dc when at home!

Did you let them do washes and tumbledries of a few tops?
If not, maybe you weren't spoiling them enough 😂

In a similar boat. In December I'll loose about £400 a month and she'll still be living at home. Have no idea what I'll do

I wasn't doing that but my washing did go down. And less showering. Dd plays netball and she worked in a chip shop when she was doing her A levels. And her jeans are from the 90's so they are enormous. Grin

I definitely was not expecting to notice the difference.

I was interested in this just now so I googled and my washing machine costs less than 20p a cycle. I am now not surprised my electric bill didn't go down much but still surprised other people's did by so much! For m, that would be losing a wash a week, possibly two, so £2 a month max less on washing.

This thread shows how differently we all approach family spending I suppose.

It's only college she'll be at. She's trying to get a part time job but not having much luck with it

cestlavielife · 15/07/2023 12:49

Is she in full time education at college

Bananajuice · 17/07/2023 18:54

Yeah she will be

SteveBuscemisRheumyEye · 17/07/2023 19:13

Are there reasons you can't work a bit more?

Yes. I approach it that I wanted her to focus on her A levels.

I fed dd when she lived here as a child. Also she showered daily and I paid for her sixth form college bus pass, her books and her clothes. Her haircuts and her toiletries. I drove her home from her job and I paid her phone contract. I also paid for her sport expenses.
