Afternoon ladies. My son is 18 and finished college. He has a part time job but it’s zero choirs contract. He is waiting for a second interview for a full time job. Do I still get UC a until he starts this job ? He has more or less got it but no start date yet . I am going to update UC on Monday but they are closed of course over weekend Thank you .

No as he is no longer in education. He can apply for UC himself now so you will not get any benefits for him.

I'm intrigued by the concept of a zero choirs contract....

Your son has left education and is no longer a Qualifying Young Person (QYP):

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2013/376/regulation/5

In some cases you can be a QYP until the 31 August following your 19th birthday but I don't think that gives any wiggle room.

If his earnings are low then he may qualify for UC in his own right.

Missed one point, you can put a message on your journal 24/7/365.

Just thinking that if you're an AP late in letting them know I'd be slightly concerned about an overpayment.

Yeah that’s what I don’t want to happen. He has only just finished college . I have had a letter saying to just let them know date for uc and child benefit. They know but I just wondered if I still get help
until he starts this job :)

Any help would be via a claim to UC in his own right.

If his zero hour earnings are much more than £100/week then the taper will reduce UC to nil. If he's getting less and there may be a wait, eg for pre-employment checks before he starts the full time job then it may be worth applying.

Thank you . All do you xx was unsure if he could apply as he lives with me . I do work but trying to work out if I should be putting extra hours in which I struggle with at the moment. He will be giving house keep. It’s so hard as you get in a rut trying to juggle what’s best financially for you and the children but I also don’t want to be on UC forever. Divorce is still fresh and I am in a panic and need to try and Do one thing at a time I guess. Thanks again x

Is he your youngest child on the claim or do you have younger kids?

MLG1977 · 08/07/2023 16:52

I have 5 children. Ages 5, 9, 11, 16 and 18. However my youngest was born in may 2018. I did wonder if they will put her on claim now he is 18 but doesn’t work like that. Just until I am sorted .

My son claimed UC when he left college and was just working part time, he got a small top up from UC but I don't think he thought it was worth it for the hassle they gave him to look for full time work etc. Fortunately he soon found a full time apprenticeship.
