Can the council decide to take back Council Tax Support?

Hi, me, my boyfriend and our baby moved into an apartment in Sept 2022 and obviously registered for council tax. It was our first home so we had never paid it before. I was only on statutory maternity pay so I emailed the council asking if there was any help or support we could receive. A couple of months later I got a revised bill with a deduction in council tax due to council tax support. In April we again got another bill will council tax support deducted. Around two weeks ago I informed the council that we would be moving out as we had found a house for the same price we were paying for the apartment. Two days ago we received a close of account bill which had added the full amount of council tax support we received in the last year back onto our bill making our bill now £450. Can they do this? We actually got more of a discount this year than the previous year but this hasn’t been added to the bill so I’m unsure what is going on? There wasn’t a change in our circumstances in that time I was still on SMP and have only gone back to work 3 weeks ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated as we’ve never moved and closed a council tax bill before

This isn't going to be easy to answer on a forum; too many variables in play.

If the Council awarded CTR and subsequently have reason to doubt the award was right, for example they've not had information they asked for or something else casts doubt on what they were told then in theory they can cancel the award.

Take your paperwork to Citizens Advice or similar and ask them to help.
