Licence Assistance uk Taken my daughter's money

Hi all. I looked into this and a Mumsnet thread came up, but it was from 2021 so I am renewing a thread. My DD aged 20 recently lost her driving license and I advised she ordered a new one. She wouldn't let me do it for her and she's really not very good at doing such admin things. Today she's messaged me saying that they've taken £89 out of her bank account when she's already paid £89. I had a quick look only to find that she's used a ghastly company called licence assistance, which of course comes up as an ad. Has she let me do it in the first place I would've just used DVLA of course and the replacement license would've only cost £20.

I read some horrific reviews on trust pilot, saying some people that even had about £1000 taken from their account. I know this is not a scam and that she willingly signed up for it. She keeps referring to it as a hack and I'll try to explain that this isn't a hack either.

I've told her to close her bank account open a new one, cancel her card and actually speak to her bank. I wouldn't normally post something like this, because I'm pretty ok at finding things out myself - but is cancelling her bank account, shifting her money out straight away and setting up a whole new thing the way to go?
I personally can't see any other way round it, so I'm hoping others may have some more knowledgeable insight into this. We can just about lose the £89, but this is allegedly on a subscription type thing and I fear money is just going to be taken from her every month.

She knows she's been an idiot.

Currently upstairs crying and messaging all her mates because I'm apparently no help. Confused

Anyone out there who can help? Thanks loads x

When you say lost licence I assume you mean mislaid bag or suchlike and not 6 quick points...

Unfortunately I think your daughter has learned a lesson which is that if you use Google (other search engines are available) for services some results are, if not actually fraudulent, then are dedicated to adding a fee for stuff that's cheaper or FoC.

If she's been charged twice for same thing can her bank help?

Can she freeze her card and then ring the bank? I think that's what I would do. I wouldn't try to close the account, it needs sorting properly. You say it's not a scam but it kind of is. Especially as they've taken 2 payments.

Oh no - she lost it in the traditional sense. I actually found it in the bottom of the washing machine the day after she applied. Of course. Of course.

In the last 10 mins monZo have actually refunded her ! I'm monstrously impressed.

She's finding out whether she should close the acc or whether a card cancellation will do the trick.

Thanks for your very speedy responses tho.

We were in a bit of crying screaming blame fest. And now we are all calm again.

Off to open a MonZo account myself ❤️.

There shouldn't be any need to cancel the card now she has told Monzo - if she gave her card details for payment this is known as a 'continuous payment authority'. As she has informed Monzo and (presumably) asked them to cancel the authority, then anything taken out of her account after she's asked for the payments to be stopped are unauthorised transactions and Monzo will have to refund them straight away.

Helpful explanation here: https://www.fca.org.uk/news/news-stories/continuous-payment-authorities-it-your-right-cancel#:~:text=With%20continuous%20payment%20authorities%20(sometimes,payday%20loans%20or%20gym%20memberships.

Continuous payment authorities: it is your right to cancel

Find out your rights when cancelling a continuous payment authority and what to do if your bank does not allow you to do this.

Thank you so much Domino Smile very useful link.

It was sorted by MonZo within minutes and I'm super impressed. But your link is very helpful for future dramas. Hopefully none. Xx
These girls need to listen to their old mothers who have been there, done that and paid the price. One day maybe. 😂. Xx
