Car Insurance Claim

Looking for some advice/past experiences…

I’ve hit my car and I need a new front bumper and front light replaced. I’ve been quoted £1000+ from different garages but with a wedding and baby coming within a the next year we are tight for money.

I am thinking of claiming on my insurance but I am soooo scared it’s going to go up alot, especially as I will be on maternity soon too. We currently pay about £50 a month for my partner (who is put as a named driver) and myself so have a really good deal.

Our policy has 6 years protected NCD. I don’t even know what this means?! And how it will be affected if we claim?! Will they charge us more of the accident is my fault too?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I work for an insurance company. If you've got protected NCD you can usually make a couple of claims in a certain timescale whether it's your fault or not and your NCD won't reduce (so you'll stay on 6 years). It doesn't mean your premium won't go up though as insurers change their rates all the time. Hope this helps xx

Thank you so much for this!! It’s really helpful. I can imagine us going from £50 to something like £200. Could this happen? Xx

I very much doubt it would go up so much unless your insurer puts their rates up drastically. Hope you get it sorted xx

What is your excess and is there a time limit you need to notify them within? I have had policies where the excess rose from £250 to £1000 if you didn't notify within 24 hours

How much is your car worth
be careful there cost and quotes are massive and you could end up with your car written off
take off your excess a lot of f the time what your left with won’t replace the car

I don’t think I do. How would they know I’ve left it over 24 hours anyway?

It’s worth about £6000-£7000

I don't know? Obviously with very little detail nobody could even begin to guess but it is something to be aware of all the same.

Looking for advice....
Hubby had car accident, not his fault. Driver admitted it was his fault. Hubby not tech savvy and is dyslexic so he speaks into his phone. He spoke by asking for our insurance company name but inadvertently got a claim management company. They sent out a low loader, collected car and asked Hubby to sign docs emailed to him. Obviously he couldn't do this so next day the company who by now he thought were agents for our insurance company agreed to bring paperwork with courtesy car. On arrival the papers of which there were many were pushed in front of him to sign which he did. The guys told him they were in a hurry to get somewhere else. He realised later this wasn't a courtesy car but a hire car. We had that car for 40 days until we were given a settlement figure for our car which had been written off. Months later we heard from management company to say the 3rd party insurance wasn't going to pay their claim. We had received a copy of the claim and couldn't believe it was for £24,000. The solicitors acting for the claim management company asked us for proof of how we had managed to buy our new car, wanted copies of any accounts we held jointly (the docs received were just in my husbands name) also what savings he had and how much pensions he had. Now 12 months on we've been told the solicitors are taking the 3rd party insurers to court to settle. Our worry is what happens if they don't pay, will we have to pay all or some of the £24,000. We are extremely worried being pensioners age 76 and 70 and only rely on our pensions. My husband only had his state pension and its not a full one. We don't want bailiffs calling which we've heard can happen. Unfortunately after we realised that husband had never actually spoke to our own insurance company we rang them to explain and were told it was too late, we had gone too far with the claim management company!
