Holiday insurance - is this right?? I can’t get a quote!

Just looking for annual policy, Im 52 fit and well with controlled under active thyroid that I take meds for , plus I take HRT like many women of my age. The two comparison sites I have tried won’t quote saying I need specialist cover. I haven’t had any hospital appt or anything just routine medical appointments.

I added menopause and Hypothyroidism to the quote . Any ideas as this sounds really weird!

My husband and now me have pre conditions and we used a specialist site it was quite expensive but we are older but it was straight forward although I had to phone rather than do it online

Whenwillitallmakesense · 20/06/2023 21:05

Try staysure or all clear - both specialise in pre-existing conditions.

Personally (I might not be right) but I don't think it'll have anything to do with HRT but more to do with thyroid. The only way you'll know is if you do another comparison leaving one or the other condition out.

Gabby10 · 20/06/2023 21:29

It will be because of the conditions, the companies they have shown will be able to cover but will want to potentially ask questions about the conditions. I would for travel insurance but one that's provided through bank accounts and those 2 conditions with the company I work for wouldn't charge you extra so if you have a bank account with travel insurance included it might be worth checking with them.
Money and pensions advice service also have a travel section online where you can pop in your age, what type of cover you want eg annual/single trip and also any health conditions, they will then give you a list of insurance companies to look at.
With most as well if they want to charge you extra to cover the conditions you take medication for then you can 'opt out' so let's say it's £100 for annual with meds it's might be £75 without them covered and all it means is that you wouldn't be covered if you had to claim for anything directly related to them but anything else would be covered. xx

Im fine with an extra cost, but im just surprised that well controlled hypo which is a lifelong non chronic condition for most I think, would be an issue. I don’t have bank account insurance. @Gabby10 thanks

You'll probably find that it won't actually be any extra to cover it it will just be because they might want to ask some questions about it such as; how many meds or have you had to see a dr about it in the last year.

saraclara · 20/06/2023 22:14

I have thyroid meds. Once or twice insurers have asked me to speak to their medical assessment team before quoting, but it's never been an issue and the people I've spoken to have given the impression that they don't know why I've been asked to call them. I still get very cheap quotes.

saraclara · 20/06/2023 22:15

It's the comparison sites that can't cope with the info you gave. Not the insurers themselves.

Just pick two or three insurers that have good reviews and call then directly.

Following with interest.

I’m only on iron, b12 and folic acid. No other prescribed tablets. Just vitamins and cod liver oil by choice. And they wouldn’t quote me either.

Some companies, including Staysure wanted a list of everything I’d ever had. Ever. Whether or not I had it now and even if it was totally fine and no meds required. They did not ask whether I still had whatever or if it was decades ago.

Fucking joke.

£400 for one trip. Ridiculous.

My partner said just tell them what you have just now that you have meds for.

However if I do that they won’t cover me. I had a panic attack and got my heart checked out. Two years ago. All totally fine. I was just stressed at work. However when I told another insurance company that I had had my heart checked they then said id not be covered for any heart related problems. WTAF. There nothing wrong with me! Unexpected heart things are exactly what I WOULD want cover for as stroke and heart attacks kill.

Greedy bastards.

We just use our regular insurance company and we have MUCH worse health than you do. They do our home and car insurance and annual travel insurance. All the big companies do this.

Ladyofthelake53 · 20/06/2023 22:35

just had an online quote from Goodtogo insurance because of this. Two medical issues with medication. Quote was very reasonable

Ellmau · 20/06/2023 22:36

I used a broker and got coverage with similar conditions to you, OP. My policy is with AXA.

Thiswayorthatway · 20/06/2023 22:47

I’m still under treatment for breast cancer. We have a family multi trip in Europe policy with Staysure for £220

I've been with Staysure before. I can only think that you've misunderstood their requirements. I have only ever been asked about prescription medications. Vitamins and supplements taken by choice are neither asked for nor would result in a higher premium.

I had heart investigations myself recently and had to wait for the results before I could take out insurance. Despite the fact that only a week before I'd had a 24 hour ECG and a scan, it didn't result in any extra premium, as the results showed no issues and I was given a clear bill of health.

I just can't understand what happened in your case, knowing the insurer and having almost the exact same history as you.
