Price of a will

My husband's FA has recommended we both update our wills to reflect our current circumstances and finances.

Just got an invoice – £2,800 for the wills with a beneficiaries protection plan.

Does this sound like a lot? It does to me, and from a brief search on Google.

It won't be the wills it will be the beneficiaries protection plan.
Which is what? Why is it needed?

Our will were about £300. Lots to leave but relatively straight forward
Was your FA allowed to give the advice to get wills? (was this regulated advice or just an add on- was that clear when they gave you this advice?) Who gave the advice to buy a protection plan?

I’m a solicitor and our most expensive wills are £450+VAT for a pair. What is a beneficiary protection plan according to them?

AuburnLeaves · 05/06/2023 16:50

Beneficiary plan… I’m not even sure! We haven’t had anything done yet and the invoice has been sent upfront… which is also a surprise, though perhaps it’s not unusual.
Lots of questions to clear up.

Seems very expensive and I would expect a breakdown of costs and the purpose of each document together with the estimated invoice.

You could wait till free wills month in October. You agree to leave a small sum to a charity in return for a free will. Lots of solicitors are part of the scheme.

We got our wills free with DHs union membership.

£400 or £500 should cover straightforward wills I’d have thought. But the Beneficiaries Protection Plan is a form of discretionary trust I think. Do you need one of those?

There's no need to pay for a Will in the UK.
