Scottish Child Disability payment (reditermination)

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has had to submit an appeal for the child disability payment in Scotland? I've waited months and today had a backpayment which indicates the lower rate. I'm waiting on the award letter. My daughter has been referred to camhs for a neurodevelopment assessment and is also on melatonin. I applied back in December and I updated whenever I got any forms etc. However I'm sure my daughter should be at least awarded the middle rate. Has anyone had to apply for a reditermination? Did it change anything? It's a massive struggle with my daughter, she's 9.5. She has has ran away a few times , has meltdowns, high anxiety, hurts herself at times and has sensory issues etc. She has been assigned a pupil and family support worker in school too but is very good at masking. No official diagnosis as the wait times are massive. I'm just not sure what sort of things I should put on the form? I have to finish work to collect her from school, get taxis etc to be there on time. Some days I'm late if she has a hard morning etc. Anyone with a neurodiverse child will understand where I'm coming from. But I do feel she should be awarded above the lower rate.

Any help or advice appreciated.

Hi Emb86! I have no experience with redetermination but I have read on here that sometimes they can reduce the award even further when you appeal which is a scary thought. As stated on their website any child who needs frequent attention throughout the day or night in connection with their bodily functions is entitled to middle rate. By what you have described your daughter fits into that box. Would a letter from her gp explaining her care needs be something you could possibly get to send along with your appeal? I would go in depth about her daily living, how it affects her, what you need to help her with and the struggles she faces with every day living. Not sure if this is accurate but a friend of mine also told me before I applied for my son that we, as parents, need to prove that our children’s care needs exceed those of a similar age group. For example - if children who are no longer infants (and are say around aged 4/5 or older) - have frequent night wakings, still in nappies, cannot communicate etc, then they would be seen to have additional care needs as per the middle rate care description. Hope this is of some help to you. Good luck.
