Paid off credit card statement early still taken from my bank account

I paid off my entire balance due a few days before it was to be collected from my bank account. It was still taken from my bank account.
Will it be returned if so when?

There obviously wasn't the money in my account so it should bounce back

Will my credit card sort it self out so no interest since I did pay it in full before the due date?

You'll need to contact your credit card company (and perhaps bank too) to be sure, but they are usually quite clear on what happens to Direct Debits if an additional payment is made prior to the due date.

Usually it will go ahead if payment is due in the next few days, as it is too late to change it. Sometimes they will reduce the DD, if the additional payment processes in time for them to amend the DD.

If there wasn't the money in the account, how did your bank deal with it? Overdraft?

(There won't be any interest if you paid off the full balance before the due date.)

Some of them work like this. If a DD is set up, then it will still be taken, whether or not you pay, or might only be adjusted/missed, if you pay before a certain date.

If your account is in credit, you could contact them and ask for the money back.

But if you have 'spare' money in your credit card account, you could redress the balance by just putting your normal spending on your credit card until it's used up. But if you've paid your account off, no interest will be charged either way

Yes read the terms of your agreement, most credit cards work this way with respect to additional payments. It will sit as a credit on your card unless the company allows a refund.

This happened to me and I contacted the bank. They refunded it back to my current account. (All with HSBC)

It was too late for the credit card company to stop the direct debit. This will be in your terms and conditions.

If there wasn't money in your account to cover the direct debit, has it actually gone out or was payment refused? It won't go out and then pop back in again, it's either gone out or it hasn't. You'll either be charged by the bank for a bounced direct debit, or charged for going into an overdraft.

Why did you pay it when there was a direct debit coming out to cover it?

If it makes a credit balance on your account then they will refund it to you, but you might have to request it (different providers do different things).

In future - pay off the balance less the DD amount.

This is why i choose to pay off manually rather than DD.
