DS is a student but just turned 18
He will doing to PT course about 100 miles away from next term so will live above a pub
The course is 2 days in college but also 3 days of practical training but he will still count as PT
Is he entitled to UC ? It's so confusing

Does he have any student loans available to him?

Findyourneutralspace · 20/05/2023 22:34

Will he be paid for the three days practical training? It doesn’t sound like it quite fits for UC but maybe student finance?

Findyourneutralspace · 20/05/2023 22:34

Actually sounds like an apprenticeship?

caringcarer · 21/05/2023 01:05

I don't think students can claim UC. He would not qualify for JA because he would not be available for work. Could he get a student loan? That would be most likely a source of income or could he get an evening job in the pub?

thebestbirtheraccordingtoDD · 21/05/2023 14:03

Not sure about loans. He won't be paid for anything it's a sport that he will train for outside college hours.

That's what student loans are for - and a PT job.

Schedule doesn't allow for a job unfortunately

Is he on his course every evening? Pubs generally want evening staff. My niece worked in a pub 4 nights a week whilst she was at Uni. Your son is going to live over a pub so if he asked they might give him an evening or weekend PT job.

NerrSnerr · 23/05/2023 19:36

What is the actual course? Then people may be able to advise. Could he ask the college/ course leaders?

Is there any opportunity to work within the sport doing coaching/ kids clubs/ instructing?

whowhatwerewhy · 24/05/2023 06:36

He needs to look into student loans and a part time job that fits around his schedule.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 24/05/2023 07:00

How on earth can he not have any spare time for a part time job?? Surely he can’t be training in the day time and evening time? What about weekends? If he’s at college 2 days and training 3 days, he has 2 full days spare.

HelloMrBond · 24/05/2023 07:25

It is your sons choice to undertake this course and training, so it is up to your son to fund this choice, not the responsibility of tenge tax payer. If he wants it enough, he will make it happen. Evenings and weekends are there for him to be earning, he can get a job.

Uc is not usually applicable to students. (Unless they have a child or sometimes are disabled). On uc you are expected to have a work commitment (unless exempt) and that doesn't fit with students.

He needs a student loan (which the living part would be taken £ for £ off any UC claim) and a job.

Career development loan if the course isn’t eligible for student finance?

thebestbirtheraccordingtoDD · 25/05/2023 17:17

So the course will be 2 days.
Training during the other days and matches on evenings and weekends
As the match days aren't set it would be difficult to commit to a PT job
Asking the landlord is an option though maybe they can give shifts as and when they need him and there are no matches on
He's got an appointment next week at the JC so we'll see what they say
Thank you all
